SBNation Mock Expansion: Coyotes Protected List
So if you haven't heard, which I wouldn't be surprised of, SBNation is conducting a mock expansion of the NHL. Basically they let some crazy people vote and they stacked it for Winnipeg and Quebec City. to be our "hypothetical teams. In that vein each of the bloggers for the 30 current teams had to create a list of protected players that the two GMs of said teams wouldn't be able to pick. So here's my list of those I thought the Coyotes might want to protect and those that didn't make the cut. First here are the rules I had to follow though so no one gouges out my eyes for not protecting their favorite players and you'll see why I hate Wayne Gretzky even more...
The Rules:
Ground rules on protected lists:
- Teams can protect either "1 goalie, 5 defensemen and 9 forwards" OR "2 goalies, 3 defensemen and 7 forwards."
- If you go the two goalie route, at least one goalie left unprotected must have played in at least 10 games last season OR 25 games in the last two seasons combined. One game = at least 31 minutes.
- Each team must leave unprotected at least one defenseman who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
- Each team must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
- Players who have played in 49 or fewer games are automatically exempt and do not need to be protected.
Ground rules on drafting:
- Each expansion team selects 30 players. A total of 60 players will be selected.
- The first 26 picks are to be used on three goaltenders, eight defensemen and thirteen forwards.
- The final four picks can be used to pick a player at any position.
- Only one goalie or one defenseman can be selected from each existing team.
- Team must be compliant with the salary cap.
More on who was protected and who wasn't after the jump...
Who is Coyotes "Mystery Buyer" Matthew Hulsizer?
ESPN reported earlier today that the Mystery Buyer that the Phoenix Business Journal mentioned earlier in the week was one Matthew Hulsizer. This is a completely new name to Coyotes fans who have been hearing Reinsdorf and Ice Edge all summer and random names in between. So who is this man of man of mystery?
Well he's a Chicago based businessman that founded a Financial Services Firm called Peak6 in 1997. Peak6 is an options equity firm credited with being the first to go completely "off-floor" or that they didn't have traders that stood in the stock exchange. He then created Optionshouse, an online Options trading service that is now one of the top rated online services according to Barron's and continues to win awards. More recently he and his company created WeSeed, a virtual stock and options trading site that allows you to "play the market". It's basically a virtual stock market that uses fake money but uses real stocks and numbers to simulate how your choices work in the real world and learn the market. This has expanded into a social network that gives tips and education worldwide.
Much like the guys involved with Ice Edge he's been an innovator in the financial world, just on what seems to be a larger scale. Peak6 runs what the Wall Street Journal ranked as the 21st best hedge fund globally in terms of return and the company does hundreds of millions of dollars a year in transactions. He's no small time businessman. There's no exact number on his personal net worth, but in ESPN is correct then it's well more than the $280 million that Jerry Reinsdorf is reportedly worth and that would be a good thing for Coyotes fans.
ESPN Reporting "Mystery Buyer" is Matthew Hulsizer
Hulsizer is a Chicago based businessman with deep pockets and an interest in hockey. Could be a good fit. More on this soon...
Phoenix Coyotes Resign Lee Stempniak to 2 Year Deal
While the Coyotes are expected to officially announce the deal tomorrow, word has gotten out to the Arizona Republic that the team has resigned Right Wing Lee Stempniak to a two year deal. Per team policy, they haven't announced any other terms of the deal, but reports have the team paying 1.75 million per year.
Stempniak was solid for the team after the Coyotes traded Matt Jones, a 4th round and a 7th round draft pick. He scored 14 goals and added 4 assists in only 18 regular season games. He dried up in the playoffs though with only 2 assists in the series against Detroit.
This is a great deal from the Coyotes side as it gives them an experienced winger that has played well, at least here. at only 1.75 a year he fits the budget and doesn't have to relearn the style of play. One thing that could hurt is production is the absence of Matthew Lombardi as those tow played well together, but expect Stempniak to to line up with Vernon Fiddler instead who along with Taylor Pyatt also showed some chemistry last year.
Summer Fill: 10 Questions with J.P. from Japer's Rink about the Washington Capitals
In an effort to cross-promote our blogs and create news when there isn't any SBNation has the Summer Fill where we ask questions of another team's writer and let you enjoy the answers. I drew J.P. from
Jasper'sJapers' Rink and asked him 10 questions about the Washington Capitals. Enjoy! Be sure to check out the questions they asked of us here.
1) The Coyotes have certainly had to deal with creating fans where there was not a natural market. Capitals fans have had the same issue with one fan in particular - the first fan. Is it at all disheartening that despite being far and away the best team in the DC area, the President has still not attended a game (or do the rocking red jerseys selling out the stadium every game negate any bother).
The President ribbed Ted Leonsis recently, telling him that he was planning on attending a Caps playoff game last spring... but the Caps were playing golf before he could. Ouch.
It would be nice for the team and nice for the sport for him to make an appearance, but I'm not sure anyone is too concerned over it.
2) Clearly the Caps are one of the best teams in the league with as much offensive ability as anyone, and they will again be preseason favorites to win the Cup...have they done enough this offseason to address whatever it was that caused them to bow out in the first round to Montreal?
The easy - but legitimate - answer is "I'll tell you next spring." Roster-wise, not much has changed. In fact, in some ways the team looks worse off (with the second-line center position still a question mark and the defense, as a whole, losing a few players all of whom are better than the current #6 and #7 blueliners in the organization).
But more important than the personnel are the adjustments that need to be made at both a strategic and motivational level, and it's going to be awfully hard to gauge those changes in relatively meaningless regular season games.

This post is brought to you by the new Dirty Sweet album "American Spiritual" - seriously awesome stuff...go out and buy it now from iTunes...and buy their first album "...Of Monarchs and Beggars" too. You will not be disappointed.
Ok, back to hockey. Still not a whole lot going on (aside from the idiotic commenters I've endured from Yahoo! on my Mt. Puckmore), but more and more stuff keeps coming down the pipeline. Thankfully, other folks have been on top of it...
Phoenix Coyotes Hockey on AZ Vibe " Did Tikhonov just request a trade from the Coyotes?
AZ Vibe got to the bottom of the rumor that Dmitri Chesnokov got rolling on Twitter yesterday. Short version - Viktor Tikhonov did NOT request a trade from the Coyotes... [s/t Beastonnette who had this in the fanshots yesterday]
And we've had the return of editor-in-chief/alpha dog numero uno Travis Hair, reporting live from somewhere in Utah:

Phoenix Coyotes 2010-11 Player Previews: Paul Bissonnette
The Phoenix Coyotes Player Previews Continue today with Paul Bissonnette. Hey look 2 days in a row! No wai!
For much of his tenure with the Phoenix Coyotes Paul Bissonnette has basically had two functions. First to be the DJ in the locker room, a job at which he has apparently done well, and second to entertain the fans. He did quite well at this over the summer with his now defunct twitter account and now with an almost as funny facebook page with way too many pictures of him in a Speedo. In terms of actual hockey he played fairly well when he got the chance this past season, dropped the mitts at the right times and wasn't a liability out there. Unfortunately he didn't get a whole lot of chances to shine as he was a frequent scratch. That could all change this coming season though...
