Game Recap

The Arizona Coyotes met the Anaheim Ducks for the second this season, with a different result. After giving up the first two, the Coyotes mounted a successful comeback and took a brief lead, only to give up an early third-period game and lose in overtime.

The Coyotes did not have a good start to this game. The Ducks scored twice in the first period, both on the power play, with Troy Terry netting both goals.

Thankfully, that seemed to wake the Desert Dogs up, and they quickly responded. Lawson Crouse scored his first of the season just over two minutes later, cutting the Ducks’ lead in half.

J.J. Moser and Nick Bjugstad assisted on the goal, which saw Crouse alone in front of the net, perfectly positioned to score.

And it didn’t take long for the Coyotes to tie it up with another first of the season. This time, it was Logan Cooley lighting the lamp, getting his first from Moser and Liam O’Brien.

Cooley showed excellent speed and puck control as he was sprung by Moser, giving him an amazing first of many goals.

The Coyotes may have tied it up, but it was far from over. The Coyotes were at least awake, with two periods left to go.

Arizona would get their first lead in a second three-quarters of a way through the period. Neither team gave an inch for most of the middle frame, but late in the period, a shot from Matias Maccelli got to Lawson Crouse in front of the net, and he knocked it home to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game.

Unfortunately, things would not be so good in the third period. Less than a minute into the final frame, Jack McBain, fed up with Radko Gudas, lost control and took a cross-checking penalty. Gudas had been a pest all game, but he ultimately got what he wanted as McBain headed to the box while the Coyotes had a one-goal lead.

Anaheim didn’t score on the resulting power play, but they did manage to build some momentum, and Leo Carlsson tied it up just over a minute after the Coyotes killed the penalty.

Neither team broke the tie in the final frame, but Troy Terry would complete the hat trick late in overtime and give the Ducks a 4-3 win. It was a bad loss by the Coyotes, who seemed to be playing catch-up all game.
