Game Recap

The Arizona Coyotes fell short of avenging their loss to the Calgary Flames last week, losing 3-2 in overtime. The Coyotes had a 2-0 lead, only to see the Flames tie it up with two goals in 63 seconds and score the eventual game-winner on a power play in overtime.

The first period started slow, with only nine shots on goal between the two teams. But the three penalties that the Coyotes took were not a good sign, and neither was the fact that they couldn’t convert on either of their two power plays.

After 20 minutes of little action, the Coyotes did find the back of the net midway through the second period, with Sean Durzi getting his seventh of the season. Durzi fired a shot through traffic over Dan Vladar’s glove to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the Coyotes’ trend of penalties was also present. Durzi’s goal came a minute after a successful kill, and three minutes after taking the lead, the Coyotes took another penalty. Not only were the Desert Dogs playing with fire by giving the Flames so many chances, but they were also killing their ability to build any sort of consistent momentum to take control of the game.

The second period also saw forward Nick Schmaltz leave the game after being limited to 11 minutes and 11 seconds of ice time. Per Daily Faceoff’s Mike Gould, Schmaltz is day-to-day and is questionable for the Coyotes’ next game in Vancouver.

Arizona doubled their lead early in the third, with Logan Cooley getting his fourth of the season from Sean Durzi and Clayton Keller.

Cooley did a great job getting to the front of the net and redirecting a shot from Durzi. With a goal and an assist, Durzi was doing everything in his power to get the Coyotes a win last night.

Unfortunately, that seemed to finally wake up the Flames, who came back with a vengeance. Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri both scored in a minute and three seconds and by the halfway point of the period, it was a tie game.

The Coyotes looked decent in overtime, with Cooley getting a few good looks. Unfortunately, an ill-timed too many men penalty led to the Flames getting one last power play. After failing to score on any of their four power plays during regulation, Yegor Sharangovich scored the game-winner with 17 seconds left.

While the Coyotes played a good game and got a point, they ultimately cost themselves the win. They failed to capitalize on their chances with the man advantage and took far too many penalties. Hopefully, last night’s game will be a learning experience for the young team because they need to improve.
