Game Recap

After pulling out a win against the New Jersey Devils, the Arizona Coyotes dropped their second game of the season against the New York Rangers. It was a tight game, but the Desert Dogs chased most of the matchup and ran out of time before they could tie it up.

The Coyotes and Rangers looked evenly matched for most of the game. The two clubs spent the opening frame testing each other, with Igor Shesterkin and Connor Ingram both looking good in net.

New York got on the board first, with Chris Kreider getting his fourth of the season. A bad pinch at the Rangers’ end led to Mika Zibanejad leading a 2-on-1, who passed the puck to Kreider, allowing him to easily make it 1-0.

All things considered, it wasn’t a bad period. And the Coyotes did a good job responding in the second.

Clayton Keller got the Coyotes on the board early in the middle frame with his first of the season. The Coyotes were on the power play when Braden Schneider was in the box for holding when Nick Schmaltz found Clayton Keller, who fired it home from the faceoff circle to tie the game.

After tying the game, the Coyotes had nothing but chances to take the lead. K’Andre Miller was almost immediately sent to the box, but the Coyotes failed to convert. Then, with a minute and 19 seconds left in the period, the Coyotes had a 5-on-3 when Alexis Lafrenière and  Ryan Lindgren took penalties for slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct, and they couldn’t convert again.

All that came back to bite them in the final frame. Matt Dumba was in the box for cross-checking, and an Artemi Panarin shot went off Vincent Trocheck to give the Rangers the lead.

The Coyotes would get a golden chance to tie things up not long after when Logan Cooley found a wide-open Jason Zucker. Barclay Goodrow took down Zucker and the referees awarded him a penalty shot, but Shesterkin made the save, keeping the game 2-1.

That was the last gasp for the Coyotes, who couldn’t do much in the final five minutes. Even with a pulled goalie they couldn’t get many chances, and ultimately fell 2-1.
