The Arizona Coyotes have made another front-office move. After firing their previous Director of Scouting Lindsay Hofford, they have named Darryl Plandowski as their new Director of Amateur Scouting.
Plandowski comes to the Coyotes from the 2020 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. He had been serving as the Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting for the organization, having spent the previous eleven seasons as head amateur scout.
It is difficult to know how many draft decisions Plandowski was personally involved in, but the Lightning have been the best example of building a champion team through the draft.
Unlike the Coyotes, the Lightning have drafted well both inside the first roun, and beyond. The 2011 draft may be the best example of it, with six players playing a total 1,426 NHL games and every player playing in an NHL game.

Key players that the Lightning drafted included Brayden Point (79th overall), Cedric Paquette (101st overall), Nikita Kucherov (58th overall), and Ondrej Palat (208th overall) were all outside of the first round, and have all played hundreds of NHL games.
