Game Preview

Well it was bound to happen eventually. The Arizona Coyotes’ six game win streak came to an end on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks. The Coyotes looked disinterested during much of the game, and while they managed to tie it up once the Ducks would ultimately win the game 3-1. For a team that is deep in the hunt for a playoff spot it wasn’t a great effort, especially against a team that they should have beaten.

Arizona’s game didn’t have many bright spots. They have five power play opportunities and didn’t score on any of them, including a 5-3 for almost two minutes. They were also relatively undisciplined, giving the Ducks five power plays of their own. Even the penalty kill, the fairly consistent bright spot this season, failed to prevent the Ducks from scoring two power play goals. Those two power play goals would come in the third period, a period where the Coyotes needed to have a strong push after a weak opening forty minutes.

Luckily one loss hasn’t killed the Coyotes chances yet. They were overtaken by the Colorado Avalanche and are currently three points out of a playoff spot. Getting two more wins then the Avalanche and Minnesota Wild is far from impossible, but not if they have many more games like tonight.

Things aren’t going to get much easier for the Coyotes with tonight’s opponent. The Calgary Flames are one of the best teams in the league right now and are currently on top of the Western Conference. After years of being not that great the Flames have rebuilt themselves as one of the most skilled teams in the league, a team that can score like few others and is expected to go far in the playoffs.

The last time the Coyotes and Flames played the Flames would win the game 5-2. That loss would prove to be a turning point for the Coyotes as they went on a tear winning the next six games before ultimately losing to the Ducks. That’s not to say that Calgary did bad after they won, they won their next five games. As Coyotes fan’s have learned though all good things must come to an end, with the Flames losing their last three games against the Wild, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and last night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Last night’s game was a 2-1 loss, and the fourth game in a row where Calgary scored two or fewer games. Normally facing a team in the second game of a back to back would be a blessing from the schedule gods, but expect Calgary to come in hot looking to put an end to their losing streak.

Players to Watch

Arizona: Lawson Crouse – Crouse had the Coyotes lone goal against the Ducks. Crouse has been pretty hot as of late and has five points in the last six games and is one of four Coyotes players with eleven goals.

Calgary: Sean Monahan - Monahan comes into tonight riding a five game point streak. He is one of two Calgary players with 30 goals and is tied for second on the team with 72 points.

Arizona: Jordan Oesterle (questionable, upper body), Derek Stepan (lower body), Kyle Capobianco (lower body), Nick Schmaltz (lower body), Michael Grabner (questionable, eye), Antti Raanta (lower body)

Calgary: James Neal (lower body), Michael Stone (arm)

If Arizona losses tonight will it lead to another win streak?
