In the second pick of the third round the Arizona Coyotes have drafted defenseman Ty Emberson who will be playing with the University of Wisconsin next season. The Coyotes acquired the 73rd overall pick from the Carolina Hurricanes along with Marcus Kruger in exchange for Jordan Martinook and a 2018 fourth round pick.
Emberson previously played with the US National U18 Team and in 61 games finished with 4 goals and 23 assists. Like previous defenseman pick Kevin Bahl Emberson isn’t going be an offensive threat, but unlike Bahl he is a right handed.
Last Word On Hockey describes Emberson as a player that “is often overshadowed by his more highly-hyped teammates.” That shouldn’t deter Coyotes fans as they also say “one could make the case that he is the most reliable and consistent defender on the team.” He can play against the other teams and kill penalties, two things that the Coyotes will be looking for in the coming years.
Picking Emberson and Bahl seems to suggest that Chayka’s analysis of the Coyotes prospects has the team lacking defensive prospects. With two picks focusing on defensive defenseman Chayka is clearly trying to address a key area of the team that can be overlooked.
