Since last week, it felt like we were just waiting for the official announcement and it is finally here.
The Arizona Coyotes have named Rick Tocchet as their new head coach.
Rick Tocchet is not new to the Coyotes organization, he played for the team from 1997-2000.
In more recent memory with the Coyotes, he was part of Gretzky’s bench crew during the 2005-06 season.
He has spent the past three years with the Pittsburgh Penguins, running their power play and forward lines.
Tocchet seems very excited to rejoin the Coyotes.
John Chayka is also excited to have him back.
From Dan Rosen of NHL.com about Tocchet and communication after winning the Penguins second cup in two years.
Here is what Tocchet told me during the Cup Final: "Communication with today's athlete is huge, and that's one of my strengths. ..."— Dan Rosen (@drosennhl) July 11, 2017
More Tocchet from the Cup Final: "I was a first-liner and I was a fourth-liner and a guy that sat out. I can relate with anybody."— Dan Rosen (@drosennhl) July 11, 2017
Tocchet was also the Phil Kessel Whisperer in Pittsburgh, can he do the same for the young forwards here? (I also recommend reading the article by Seravalli that is linked.)
How do you feel about this hiring?
We will have more information on Tocchet tomorrow.
