The Arizona Coyotes kick off their development camp today at 2 pm until 4:15 pm at AZ Ice Peoria (located at 15829 N 83rd Ave, Peoria, AZ 85382). They also have sessions from 9 am - 12 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, with a team scrimmage at 6 pm on Friday evening.

Planning on heading out and want a little cheat sheet as to who is going and who to watch? You’ve come to the right place!

Goalies

1 G Miska Hunter University of Minn-Duluth
60 G Madsen Merrick Harvard
70 G Källgren Erik IK Oskarshamn
90 G Castor Jaxon Arizona State University

Erik Källgren should be a recognizable name, one of the goalies drafted by the Coyotes in 2015, the same draft as Adin Hill. He has been playing in Sweden for a lower league team but is scheduled to play for AIK this season.

Next, we have Hunter Miska, who has a killer mask painted by his dad.

He was signed as a college free agent after taking University of Minnesota-Duluth to the Frozen Four Final, where they lost to Denver University.

Next up is Merrick Madsen, the starter for Harvard, who came over in the Nick Cousins trade with the Flyers.

Lastly, a local kid who is a commit to Arizona State University, Jaxon Castor. He will be with the Sun Devils this season and representing goalies who grew up starting in the Arizona Market.

Out of the goalies, keep an eye on Hunter Miska. In 39 games with University of Minn-Duluth, he had a goals against of 2.20 and a save percentage of .920. He will most likely be seeing time in the ECHL this season to get used to the speed of the game and the AHL.

You have to love camp numbers, all way deep into the 90’s.

The usual suspects of who would be in development camp are in town: Dylan Strome, Nick Merkley, Clayton Keller, Christian Fischer, and Conor Garland.

Strome is back for his third camp, let's see if he sets himself above and beyond his teammates. This year we may get to see Merkley properly after last year’s non-skating showing during camp due to his knee injury/surgery.

One of the prospects to keep an eye on would be Jens Lööke, who signed an entry-level contract with the Coyotes earlier in the off-season. Also, watch for all of our recent draft picks in Mackenzie Entwistle, Tyler Steenbergen, Nate Schnarr, and Erik Walli Walterholm.

Dev Camp Defenders

75 D Capobianco Kyle L Sudbury
92 D Hoefenmayer Noel L Ottawa 67's
94 D Westerlund Filip R Frölunda
95 D Crotty Cameron R Brockville/Boston University

This is a great chance to see some of the defenders that the Coyotes have started to hoard over the past few drafts and a look at a few players who were invited.

Names you should already know from other camps would be Kyle Capobianco, Cam Dineen, Dean Stewart, Patrick Kudla, and Jalen Smereck (an invite from last year who signed a deal).

An interesting name to watch is Brandon Hickey, who played with Clayton Keller on that amazing Boston University team and was acquired by the Coyotes in the Mike Smith trade.

Also keep an eye on Pierre-Olivier Joseph (P.O. as he wants to be called), this year’s first round pick. He is a few years down the road development and size wise, but he could show flashes of his game at this camp. He likes to compare himself to P.K. Subban, and if he can play like P.K. but as a left shot, I think the Coyotes will be A-okay.

Another one to watch is Filip Westerlund, the second round pick for the Coyotes out of Frölunda HC in Sweden. He idolizes Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Niklas Hjalmarsson and plays with next year’s projected number one draft pick, Rasmus Dahlin. Frölunda HC is known for their development of amazing players (See: Henrik Lundqvist) and will most likely play in Sweden one more year before coming to North America.

Who are you excited to see?
