Player Grades 2017: The High Expectations & Underperformance of Jamie McGinn

How did Jamie Mcginn do in his first season in the desert?

NHL: Arizona Coyotes at Minnesota Wild Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

In the offseason prior to the 2016-17 season, the Arizona Coyotes signed Jamie McGinn to a 3-year deal.

McGinn came into the season with high expectations, as he scored 22 times in the previous season. With the Coyotes he netted 9 goals along with 8 assists, totaling 17 points for his first season in the desert. He also had 23 penalty minutes and played 72 out of 82 games this season, though he was scratched because of lack of production.

I liked his grittiness and toughness all year long. McGinn’s Plus/Minus was a -23 and he had just over 1.6 shots per game. Though, he wasn't a very good face-off man, winning only 33% of his faceoffs. His penalty minutes were kept to a minimum. He had 23 of them with 1 fight.

Furthermore, I believe he has a chance to jump start his career here, he has a chance to be one of our leaders that can help us get to the playoffs.

With the Expansion Draft looming, he could be exposed and potentially drafted to go play in Vegas. If he is protected and we keep him, he will be expected to have a bounce-back season.

So now we come to the part where I have to grade him and how he played during the season. His grade is a C+. I think on the goal scoring part, he had a terrible season, but as we got towards the end of the season, he showed signs of improvement. His defense was pretty good, he let people know that he was there and wasn't going to be pushed around.

Hopefully, if we end up keeping him next year, he will have rebound and come back better than ever. McGinn has a lot of potential and I believe the Coyotes can bring it out of him.

The grades of all the other Coyotes players can be found on our master post here.
