This morning during their 11am press conference the Arizona Coyotes officially introduced John Chayka as the new general manager of the team. The 26 year old was hired last June as the assistant general manager for analytics and has been working closely with the coaching staff for a year.
The Alternate Governor Gary Drummond will be the President of Hockey Operations and Dave Tippett will continue to serve as head coach and will step into the role of Vice President of Hockey Operations. He has also signed a five year contract extension with the team.
Not sure everyone is aware that co-owner Gary Drummond spearheaded John Chayka's hire last summer. Dave Tippett was a big fan of the hire.— Craig Morgan (@craigsmorgan) May 5, 2016
The team is working on hiring a seasoned assistant general manager to work closely with Tippett and Chayka for support. Chayka will be be responsible for player decisions ultimately. The Coyotes are looking to have a system similar to the Arizona Cardnials ownership/general manger/coach relationship.
Coyotes GM John Chayka: "This is about creating a model that is player-centric."— Craig Morgan (@craigsmorgan) May 5, 2016
And who might some of those players be? A few well known names, for starters:
Chayka: feels pretty strongly about a couple players. Mentioned Doan and 'generational defenseman' Oliver Ekman-Larsson.— Catherine Silverman (@CataCarryOn) May 5, 2016
Arizona will have plenty of time before the NHL Entry Draft to assess its various RFAs and UFAs and decide who stays and who goes. It should be an eventful few months for Chayka and the new team.
Oh, and one more thing.
LeBlanc says he will be shocked if they get to the NHL Draft on June 24th without a significant announcement regarding the arena situation.— Howlin' Hockey (@HowlinHockey) May 5, 2016
Here is the presser if anyone missed it.
