Arizona Coyotes @ Los Angeles Kings Instant Recap: Howling in California

The Coyotes win another game in California, defeating the Kings 3-2 behind Hanzal's two goals.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Martin Hanzal has been one of the most consistent players throughout the season for the Coyotes, having 13 assists. There was only one thing missing so far: goals. Tonight, he managed to score two of them, helping the Coyotes keep up with the Lakers Kings when they couldn't generate much offense.

Scoring Summary

1st period

0-1 LAK goal @ 05:54: Dustin Brown backhand shot, assisted by Drew Doughty and Tanner Pearson. Soon after a faceoff win, Pearson passes the puck to Doughty, who accidentally sends the puck to Mike Smith after trying to unsuccessfully control it. Brown though was waiting for an opportunity in front of the net, so he scores on the rebound as Smith didn't have the time to freeze the puck.

1-1 ARI goal @ 11:37: Martin Hanzal wrist shot, unassisted. Brayden McNabb turns the puck over as he tries to clear it from the Kings zone. Hanzal makes a wrist shot under no pressure to beat Jonathan Quick and score his first goal of the season!

2nd period

1-2 LAK goal @ 05:00: Tyler Toffoli wrist shot on the power play, assisted by Jamie McBain and Alec Martinez. After some good puck movement from the Kings on the power play, McBain fakes a shot before passing it to Toffoli, who beats Smith on a nice wrist shot.

2-2 ARI goal @ 09:59: Martin Hanzal backhand shot, assisted by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Tobias Rieder. Rieder was fighting hard for the puck in the boards before giving it back to OEL, who shoots the puck on LA's Alec Martinez. Hanzal gets to it and makes a backhand shot that floats into the net after hitting Martinez's stick.

3rd period

3-2 ARI goal @ 11:47: Brad Richardson wrist shot, assisted by Jordan Martinook and Shane Doan. Richardson scores the game winning goal on a wrist shot in front of the net, after getting the puck from Martinook who was in the right corner.

  • For the LA perspective, visit Jewels From The Crown.
  • When Hanzal scored his second of the night, the Coyotes only had 7 shots on goal (midway through the 2nd period). Things picked up offensively after that, as Arizona entered the 3rd period with 19 shots on goal, partly thanks to a couple of power plays.
  • After Max Domi tied Hanzal for first place in total points last night, Marty is now again the sole leader with 15 (2 goals - 13 assists).
  • Mike Smith did a great job tonight, stopping a lot of tough shots for a total of 33 saves.
  • Also, as Sarah McLellan points out, Smith became the fourth goaltender in franchise's history to reach 100 wins, in his 400th game.
  • The Coyotes are undefeated in California, winning two pairs of away games against both the Kings and the Ducks. They still haven't played in San Jose.
  • This is also the first time in franchise history that they sweep back-to-back games in Anaheim and Los Angeles.
  • Arizona now has 17 points, sitting on the 3rd place in the Pacific Division. The leaders, the Vancouver Canucks, have 19 points with one more game played. The Kings are second with 18.
  • Antoine Vermette was back on the ice tonight after missing the last three games with a lower-body injury.

Looking ahead

The Coyotes play one more home game on Thursday before they embark into a four game road trip. It is against the Edmonton Oilers at 7:00 PM Arizona time.
