Arizona Coyotes place Joe Vitale on IR, recall Matthias Plachta

A not-unexpected roster move for the Arizona Coyotes.

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Coyotes have placed Joe Vitale on injured reserve, and recalled forward Matthias Plachta from AHL Springfield to fill his roster spot, the team announced Monday afternoon.

Vitale sustained some sort of upper body injury Saturday night against the Boston Bruins, and the Coyotes seemed to know from the very beginning that it was going to be a long-term injury.

This opens up an opportunity for Plachta, who surprised many at training camp after signing a one-year entry level contract with the Coyotes this summer. In three games with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, Plachta has six shots on goal, two penalty minutes, and is a +1 overall.

What got Plachta to North America was his size on the wing (6' 2", 220 pounds), and his excellent season with Adler Mannheim in the German Hockey League (DEL). He posted 14 goals and 21 assists in 47 regular season games, and five goals and four assists in 15 playoff games.

We still do not know for sure how long Vitale will be out, but Matthias Plachta could be the second rookie German winger in two years to stick with the parent club, as Tobias Rieder did in 2014-15.

This story will be updated if more details about Plachta or Vitale emerge.
