Per the club, the Arizona Coyotes have recalled forward Tobias Rieder from the AHL's Portland Pirates. The move comes as the Coyotes are currently languishing in last place in the Western Conference and 26th in goals per game.
Though the Pirates have not been off to a good start, Rieder has. The German has four goals and two assists in nine games for Portland, and posted 28 goals and 20 assists last season.
Rieder was thought in the offseason to be one of the five forwards who stood a legitimate shot at making the club out of training camp. While Justin Hodgman was the one who turned the most heads, none of the young forwards produced a strong enough preseason to merit making the roster in the eyes of the coaching staff.
But the Coyotes have stumbled badly out of the gate. With an anemic offense and a surprisingly inept defense, the Coyotes have fallen far behind the pace they needed to set to even stand a chance at making the playoffs. Rieder will hope to be a spark to get the Coyotes going again.
