Manchester Phoenix Update: All We Do Is Win

An update on our adopted European team's latest results.

Richard Allan

It has been 3 weeks since we checked in with our friends across the pond. Their fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the good during that time. The Manchester Phoenix have won 5 straight league matches. The team's latest home win came in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday night. The spectators were treated to a 7-2 thrashing of the Petersborough Phantoms. The Phoenix followed up Saturday's home win with a 8-4 win on the road against the Bracknell Bees yesterday.

Unfortunately, the teams above Manchester in the league standings, the Basingstoke Bison and the Guildford Flames, haven't given up much ground during the team's winning streak. The Phoenix did gain 2 points on the Bison by beating Basingstoke for the first time this season on March 3rd in Manchester. Unfortunately, there is no way they can catch Guildford for the regular season crown. However, they have a slim chance of catching Basingstoke for second place, though the Bison blowing a 5 point lead with only 4 games to play seems unlikely. The bigger concern is the Milton Keynes Lightning who are only one point back of the third place Phoenix.

The Phoenix have only 4 games left to play in the regular season, sets of home and away contests against bottom dwellers of the EPL, the Telford Tigers and the Sheffield Steeldogs. The regular season for the EPL ends on Sunday March 24.

One other note - The Phoenix are now out of the EPL Cup competition as a result of their 8-9 aggregate loss to Guildford in the semifinals.
