Last week the hockey sites around SB Nation were asked to vote on who they would select to represent their country on the ice in Sochi next year. The Canadian team sites voted on who should represent Canada, while Five for Howling and the other U.S. based team sites chose who should wear the red, white, and blue. The results are now in.Those selected for Team USA included Phoenix Coyote Keith Yandle. Coyotes goalie Mike Smith didn't receive enough votes to make it onto Team Canada. Check out the entire team selections via the links below.
Now, you're probably wondering who I chose. Below are the choices I submitted.
Goalies:
Craig Anderson
Ryan Miller
Jonathan Quick
Defensemen:
Matt Carle
Justin Faulk
Jack Johnson
Brooks Orpik
Kevin Shattenkirk
Ryan Suter
James Wisniewski
Forwards:
David Backes
Dustin Brown
Brandon Dubinsky
Patrick Kane
Ryan Kesler
Phil Kessel
David Legwand
Max Pacioretty
Zach Parise
Joe Pavelski
Jason Pominville
Bobby Ryan
Blake Wheeler
There is no doubt several of my selections could be considered controversial, most notably Jack Johnson, a player I've never been a huge fan of in terms of his NHL play. Johnson's love of playing for his country and his leadership in the past is what swayed me to add him to the squad and choose him as my choice for captain. He held the same position on the 2010 team. I could argue for a number of players I didn't select, including those who have worn a USA sweater before like Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh, and Tim Thomas. Given the depth the US now has picking a mock roster was much harder than it would have been back in 1998 when NHL players starting playing in the Olympics.
