Dog Caller - Sundogs Play Split Schedule with Split Results

The Arizona Sundogs played three games this past week, meeting the Tulsa Oilers on the road before back-to-back home games against the Quad City Mallards.

Last Tuesday, the Sundogs faced Tulsa and the night belonged to the Oilers. Tulsa scored once in the first, once in the second, and twice in the third before Arizona would get on the board. Late in the third, forward Kevin Petovello would light the lamp, assisted by Cody Purves. With less than a minute left in regulation, forward and Captain Jason Morgan would find the back of the net, assisted by Chad Nehring. Arizona totaled 38 shots on goal, and goalie David Brown made 24 saves on 28 shots.

Back home in Prescott Valley on Friday night, the Sundogs met the Quad City Mallards. The Mallards would net two goals in the first period and three in the second to get the 5-0 shutout win. The Sundogs had 36 shots on goal, and goalie Adam Russo turned away 23 of the 28 shots he faced.

Arizona and Quad City faced-off again on Saturday and neither team would score in the opening period. Two and a half minutes into the middle frame, forward Jake Hauswirth would score on the power play, assisted by Mario Larocque and Derek LeBlanc. The Mallards would tie things up before the second intermission and then take the lead midway through the third period. Captain Jason Morgan would light the lamp, assisted by Derek LeBlanc, to tie the game and send it to overtime. Neither team would score in the extra frame. In the shootout, Quad City would score once, while Jake Hauswirth and Derek LeBlanc would both score for the Sundogs to get the 3-2 victory. Arizona totaled 34 shots on goal, and goalie David Brown made 34 saves on 36 shots.

Forty-three games into the season, Arizona is 19-20-4 and is in 8th place with 42 points, 13 points out of 1st place.

The Sundogs' special teams currently has a 11.67% power play percentage and an 80.54% penalty kill percentage with 4 shorthanded goals scored and 2 allowed.

On 1/21 forward Jeff Kyrzakos was placed on 14-day IR and defenseman Mike Glaicar was placed on 7-day IR; On 1/24 forward Joe Dusbabek signed a contract and defenseman Chad Langlais was placed on team suspension; On 1/25 defenseman Mario Larocque was activated from IR, defenseman Gord Burnett was moved 14-day to 30-day IR, forward Andrew Coles was waived, forward Jake Hauswirth was active from IR and defenseman Karl Linden was activated from IR.

Forward Chad Nehring leads the Sundogs in both goals (25) and points (43). His 25 goals have Nehring tied for the top goal scoring position in the CHL.

On January 22, goalie Adam Russo was named the Oakley Central Hockey League Goaltender of the Week for the period ending January 20, 2013. During the time period, the Montreal native had two starts, one win, a 2.49 GAA, allowed 5 goals, made 71 saves and had a 0.934 Save %. On the season, Russo is 10-6-3 with a 2.81 GAA and a .911 Save %.

Arizona has two road games this week, Friday against the Allen Americans and the Fort Worth Brahmas on Saturday.
