We are inside of one month to go before the Phoenix Coyotes are slated to begin their preseason schedule, and we will continue our countdown focused on the number 29, or in this case the date February 9. On February 9, 2012, the Phoenix Coyotes (in the beginning stages of that incredible 11-0-1 month) had one of their more dramatic wins, beating the Calgary Flames in overtime, 2-1.
Coming out of the All Star Break, Calgary and Phoenix both were on the outside looking in for the playoffs, but both teams had seemed to right the ship a bit over the past few weeks. For the Coyotes, this grinding victory extended a (then season-long) winning streak to 4 games and epitomized the team's February mentality where they pulled victories out however possible.
The highlight that cemented this game as one of the best of the year was Shane Doan's power play one timer off of passes by Radim Vrbata and Ray Whitney with just under two minutes left in overtime. Calgary's Blair Jones had blocked a shot off his foot and could barely move and the 'Yotes just kept the play in the Calgary zone until Doan's blast ended it.
