Manchester Phoenix aim to take bite out of Steeldogs | Cheshire Today
Manchester Phoenix will look to get back to winning ways in the EPL - and avenge their defeat in the War of the Roses preseason challenge - when struggling Sheffield Steeldogs visit Altrincham on Sunday

What's the War of the Roses? From Peter with the Phoenix Podcast (posted as a comment elsewhere and re-purposed here):

War of the ROSES Derby! preview

Tomorrow is the Northern derby or "War of the Roses" depending which you perfer. With the White rose county (Yorkshire)- Sheffield Steeldogs v Red Rose County (Lancashire)- Manchester Phoenix.

Matches are very very Physical indeed, More so from them Ov`er hills! As in past seasons Phoenix have always substituted Physical and roughness for flair and skill. The championship season we had a bit of physical play, but we`ve always been Bullied off the puck by teams.

However this season we have toughened up alot and arguably the most Physical team Phoenix have had in the EPL, with signing made in off season of ex-NHLer Robert Schnabel and local players who can go like Andy McKinney who is in Hot form at the moment and not just with his fists. Richard Bentham and "the Hulk" Ciaran Long. As we`ve had more fights this season that we have had a combined 3 seasons.

But we`ve clicked at scoring considering a slow start to the season. Sheffield started well playing us Cold in the annual "WAR OF THE ROSE trophy" winning over 2 legs 2-1 with the Home leg for us finishing 0-0. Meaning for the first time they won the trophy at the 4th attempt.

They are badly missing Janis Ozlinsh who moved in Summer to Hull Stingrays in the Elite league. They have failed to replace his goals, with Derek Campbell being the player to take over and show his Physicalness too..He has show this already, However more in the physical side being No 1 PIMS with 73 in 10 gms.

Steeldogs lead by Ex Phoenix player & EX-AHLer Andre "Donkey"Payette haha Normally in the top 2 PIMS come end of season. Borders on Over the top Physicalness and sits at no5 in the PIMS stake.
Won Coach of the year last year as he brought the Steeldogs from being Whipping boys of the league to a good hockey team. Won lots of Plaudits for his sides hard work and team play, abit like this season, though the physical play has risen more and the hockey ability has fizzled away. As they played liked "GOONS" alot this season.

And in the Bad tempered EPL PLAYOFF Semi-final with Manchester, he had an Altercation with Ciaran Long after 2nd period horn. But as being lead off the ice by an official, an MK Lightning player by the name of Grant "YOU GOT BEAT AN O.A.P" McPherson threw his beer at Payette.
So it made a rival after that incident, which isn`t good the game. But did give them Sheffield a new team to have a rivalry with.

So it should be a true NORTHERN battle at the Ice Dome tomorrow! With Steeldogs who as i type this are 3-1 at home Peterboro who beat us on Pens the other night. So Sheff may have a Confidence boost for the game and we`ll want to avoid a losing streak and put our "Friendly Neighbours" From over the Pennines back in the Dog House!
