They say you can't go home again, and while technically from Edmonton, David Schlemko is returning to his Arizona hockey roots during the NHL lockout. In a press conference today, Arizona Sundogs' General Manager Chris Presson announced that Phoenix Coyotes' defenseman David Schlemko will be playing for the Sundogs. The Sundogs are the CHL affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes and are based in Prescott Valley, Arizona. The blueliner played with the Sundogs for one season after signing with the Coyotes organization back in the summer of 2007.
During the 2007-2008 season, Schlemko played 58 games for the Sundogs, amassing 39 points (10g/29a), 24 PIM and a +/- 12.The defenseman was a fan-favorite and helped take the Sundogs all the way to league champions in only their second season. He has since gone on to split time in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage and for in the NHL for the Coyotes. Last season was the first season since he made his NHL debut in 2008-2009 in which he didn't spend any time in the minor leagues. Schlemko has 6 goals, 25 assists, and a plus/minus +/- rating of 14 in his 109 games he's played for the Coyotes.
For those interested in seeing a Desert Dog play during the NHL work stoppage, you can now do so by heading up north to Tim's Toyota Center. The Sundogs open the season on October 20, and will play their first home game on October 26 against the Missouri Mavericks.
