Which Hockey Team From Europe Should We Make Our Own?

Due to the NHL lockout hockey fans are being forced to look elsewhere to get their puck fix. The folks here at the site have decided to have our readers pick a team to follow from across the Atlantic Ocean.

Sick of talking and hearing about the lockout? Struggling with the grief of no NHL hockey? We here at Five for Howling feel your pain and want to help out. One of the few pluses of an NHL work stoppage is it allows the media and fans to focus on other leagues and levels of hockey. So we've decided to have a little fun and have our readers help us pick an official Five for Howling European league squad. Five teams have been nominated. One team each from England, Russia and the Czech Republic and two from Germany. Two of the choices were in the top 10 in attendance among European clubs last season. Let's check out the choices.

Hamburg Freezers (Nominated by Phantom of Truth)

The Freezers are owned by entertainment conglomerate AEG, which also owns the L.A. Kings. Dallas Star Jamie Benn is playing with the team during the lockout. Their roster also includes a bunch of Canadian's including guys who previously played in the NHL like Matt Pettinger, Mathieu Roy, Brandon Reid and Serge Aubin.

Landshut Cannibals (Nominated by Amanda)

You have to like originality of the name. Landshut's mascot sort of looks like Sideshow Mel from The Simpsons. The team plays in German's second division. The city is located approximately an hour's drive northeast of Munich.

Lev Praha (nominated by Cornelius Hardenbergh)

Shocking to see a Bruins fan nominating the KHL team Zdeno Chara is currently playing for. This is the Prague based squad's first season in the KHL.

Manchester Phoenix (nominated by our own Carl Pavlock)

The obvious connection is the name. They play in the English Premier League. No, not that EPL; the hockey one. The Phoenix have won six games in a row and are currently in first place in the league.

SKA St. Petersburg (Nominated by the author)

The historic Russian club whose roster contains former Coyote and Yotesgurl favorite Petr Prucha, as well as Coyotes prospect Viktor Tikhanov. Like the Coyotes, SKA has never won a league championship.

To vote for your choice, put the team's name in the subject line in the comments. Voting ends at Noon MST on Thursday (10/18).
