Dog Caller - June 17, 2011 - Sundogs not taking the offseason off

Thursday, Arizona unveiled the 2010 All-Star logo

In past years, the offseason has tended to be quite early on for the Arizona Sundogs; this year the team has wasted no time getting ready for next season. Already the team has resigned three key players, hired a new radio voice, as well as unveiling the logo and jerseys for the 2012 All-Star game.

Player Resignings

The first player the Sundogs returned to the roster was defenseman and Captain Tyler Butler. Last season Butler totaled 10 goals, matched a career-high with 36 assists and set a career mark in penalty minutes (126). Butler finished fifth on the team in scoring and ranked seventh among CHL defenseman with 46 points while his 23 power-play assists were second-most among league blue-liners. The 31-year-old has amassed 232 points (65g/167a) and 442 penalty minutes (PIM) in 374 CHL regular season contests.

Next to return to the lineup was forward Luke Erickson. Erickson was acquired by Arizona via a trade last season and in 53 games with the Sundogs, he led the team and finished fifth in the CHL with a career-high 37 goals. His 63 points, also a career-best, were second-most on the team. Erickson's 14 power-play goals were fourth-most in the CHL while his six game-winning tallies led the Sundogs. He registered 23 points (14g/9a) during a 13-game point streak midway through the year and recorded 20 multiple-point games over the course of the regular season. Erickson earned Oakley Three Stars and Player of the Week honors in January, closing out the month with 17 points (11g/6a) in 11 games.

Forward Kyle Hood is the most recent player to be resigned by the Sundogs. Hood began the 2010-2011 season in Italy, playing three games abroad before returning to Arizona. For the second consecutive season, Hood led the Sundogs in scoring with career-highs in goals (15), assists (54) and points (69) in 62 games. Hood was tops in the CHL in power-play assists (33) and was recognized in the league's annual ‘Best of the Best' poll finishing second in voting in the ‘Most Underrated Player' category.

New Radio Voice

Sundog fans following the game on the radio will hear a new voice this season as Brien Rea has signed on as the team's new Vice-President of Broadcasting and Communications as well as serving as the radio voice of the Sundogs. Rea has spent the last four years in the Central Hockey League, calling games for the Austin Ice Bats during the 2007-08 season and the last three years for the Odessa Jackalopes. This past season Rea was selected to call the 2011 CHL All-Star Game in Rapid City, South Dakota. Along with his broadcasting duties, Rea will also oversee the team's media relations and communications needs.

All-Star Logo and Uniforms

At a press conference on Thursday June 16, 2011, the Arizona Sundogs in conjunction with the Central Hockey League unveiled the logo and uniforms for the 2012 All-Star Game. The All-Star game is scheduled for Wednesday January 11, 2012 at Tim's Toyota Center and will feature the Arizona Sundogs versus the CHL All-Stars.

The commemorative mark, consisting of colors red, black, blue, silver and gold, includes the Arizona Sundogs' primary ‘S' logo as part of the All-Star word mark and the Central Hockey League crest. The background of the logo is derived from the official state flag and overall geographic shape of the state of Arizona and is representative of the state's upcoming Centennial celebration in 2012. The logo will appear in marketing and branding materials, be included on the right shoulder of the Sundogs' regular season jerseys and will be featured at center ice of Tim's Toyota Center throughout the 2011-12 season.

"This logo and the jerseys has truly been a group effort," said Brad Fain, co-owner of the Sundogs. "Everyone from the staff contributed something to the finished product. We're proud of how it turned out. This is something that belongs to the community, and we're excited to tie this event into the Centennial celebration of the state of Arizona."

Captain Tyler Butler (L) was on-hand to unveil the 2012 All-Star uniforms

The All-Star uniforms are white and trimmed in black and red with ‘CHL' across the front. The Sundogs uniforms are red with white and black trim and ‘Arizona' on the front. Both jerseys feature three stars down each side - six total - to represent the Sundogs' six years of operation as a franchise. The All-Stars will wear black pants, while the Sundogs will wear red.

"This is one of the best All-Star Logos we've ever seen in the league" stated CHL Commissioner Duane Lewis. "The jerseys are equally as impressive. We're all looking forward to watching things take shape and we approach January 11th."
