Arizona Sundogs Week 3 in Review

Week 3 saw the Sundogs on the road in Texas for games seven and eight of the season. Friday night brought Arizona to Hidalgo to face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The first period brought an explosion of scoring with five goals being tallied. The onslaught started with the Bees Grant Goeckner-Zoeller notching the first goal. Showing signs of a team that is starting to gel, Arizona got the next two goals with scores by Torren Delforte and then Matt Hanson. Rio Grande Valley answered back with a powerplay goal by Grant Goeckner-Zoeller, but Arizona finished the scoring in the period with their third goal a shorthanded tally by Kevin Gardner. After the initial explosion, the teams tightened up on defense and the second period saw no goals by either team. Less than a minute into the third, Matt Hanson scored Arizona's fourth goal, notching the only tally of the period. Arizona topped Rio Grande Valley 4-2. Sundog's J.F. Perras turned away 47 of the 49 shots he faced, as he racked up the team's second win of the season.

Right after facing the Bees, Arizona jumped on a bus and traveled to Corpus Christi to face the Ice Rayz in an afternoon game on Halloween. Corpus Christi's Chad Costello got the only goal of the first period when he scored on the powerplay at 19:10. The Ice Rayz continued to put points on the board in the second with goals by Morgan MacLean and Jereme Tendler. Arizona finally got on the board with just over a minute left in the second when Torren Delforte got one past Kevin Desfosses on a two-on-one rush down the ice. Torren Delforte scored again in the third, bringing Arizona to within one, but the comeback fell short as Arizona lost 3-2.

My impressions are that the team is starting to gel, but there are still too many bad penalties being taken. The comeback against Corpus was derailed by a holding penalty with two minutes left in the game. Arizona needs to get their heads in the game and keep them there. The team is starting to get solid goaltending and shots on the net. Now, they need to keep control and beef up on defense.

Forward Linus Fagemo was put in 14 day IR on 10/29 and Arizona signed F Joey Sides to take his spot on the roster. Joey was in training camp, but was a victim of the final cut before the season started.
