Midday Minutia - The One That Got Away
With the Stanley Cup Final over and the draft coming up this Friday, I figured today was a good day to shift into draft gear with the Midday Minutia. Today I'm combining last Wednesday's MM topic on leading scorers along with the post Travis did on the 1996 Draft last week.
Midday Minutia - Bruins Run Gives Hope to Coyotes Fans
In the last day or so, I've seen a fair amount of talk about how if the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup Final this evening they will do having one of the lowest regular season point total leaders of all time. David Krejci and Milan Lucic led the Bruins this season with 62 points.Lucic and Nathan Horton had 30 and 26 goals respectively to lead the squad from Beantown.
Puck Daddy's Justin Bourne asked the following question on Twitter:
Honest question: has any team ever won a Stanley Cup with a leading scorer that tallied a lower reg season pt total than Looch/Horton? #Team
The answers Bourne got:
So we have Elias in '03 ("dead puck era"), Dave Keon in '67, and Bill Hay in '61 (thanks, @asktheduffer). What B's are doing is impressive.
What the Bruins are doing this postseason should give the Coyotes faithful some hope. The Coyotes leading point producer this past season was Shane Doan with 60 points. The Coyotes Captain started slowly as usual in 2010 - 2011. He only had one goal and seven points before December. Now about the goaltending...
Midday Minutia - Coyotes Unlucky in the Postseason
Yesterday's Minutia dealt with the number 14. Today, we subtract one number and look at the number 13. A baker's dozen is the number of games the Phoenix Coyotes have won in the playoffs since their arrival from Winnipeg back in 1996. This means team is averaging less than 1 playoff win per season during their time in the Valley of the Sun.
Furthermore, the Yotes never won a playoff series since their arrival in town. The franchise itself hasn't won a playoff series since 1987 when it was in Winnipeg. The only other franchises in the NHL that haven't won a postseason series since the Desert Dogs arrival are two teams that didn't even exist when the Coyotes started playing in what was then America West Arena, Atlanta (Winnipeg) and Columbus, and the New York Islanders. When you are in the company of two poorly run expansion franchises and an organization ruined by Mike Milbury things haven't gone well.
Midday Minutia - The Coyotes and the Number 14
Today's Minuetia involves the number 14 and the Coyotes increased goal scoring in the 2010 - 2011 regular season.
The digit is the Phoenix Coyotes league rank in goals per game at the end of the 2010 - 2011 season. Up 10 spots from the previous season.
The most obvious connection would involve the man who wears the number on his sweater, Taylor Pyatt. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native scored 33% more goals this past season than he did the prior one.
The number is also the same number as the amount Lauri Korpikoski increased his goal production by. He went from 5 goals in the 2009 - 2010 season to 19 this past campaign. The former first round pick from Finland's increased firepower was a major reason behind the aforementioned surge in scoring by the Desert Dogs.
Additionally the numeral he amount of empty net goals this season. The Coyotes scored 14 of those as opposed to 5 the prior season.
Whatever the reason, the number 14 seems to be inextricably linked to the Coyotes goal scoring prowess this past season.
