Arizona Coyotes sign Devan Dubnyk to 1-year deal

Coyotes add a new back-up goaltender.

The Arizona Coyotes found a new back-up goalie to replace Thomas Greiss. That man is former Oilers and Predators goalie Devan Dubnyk.

Signing first reported by Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

"We are very pleased to welcome Devan to our organization," said Don Maloney in the team's press release. "Devan is a goaltender with great size, skill and experience. We are confident that he can continue to develop under the guidance of Sean Burke."

The new goalie signed a one-year deal worth $800,000.

Dubnyk will be another project for goaltending coach Sean Burke to work on as the 28-year-old has yet to find his stride in the NHL. Burke and the Coyotes like big goalies and at 6' 6", Dubnyk fits that mold.

The Saskatchewan native showed a lot of promise in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, posting a .921 save percentage for a bad Oilers team, but his play really fell off last season. His save percentage dipped to .894 in 32 games with the Oilers before being traded to the Predators and playing just two games.

Arizona has had success in the past helping out big goalies yet to find their groove (i.e. Mike Smith). Dubnyk is an affordable option to play between 20-25 games should Smith stay relatively healthy.
