Phoenix Coyotes Preseason Countdown: 15 Days

Richard Wolowicz

Today’s edition of our Preseason Countdown looks at Coyotes’ prospect Mark Visentin.

Drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Mark Visentin played his first season with the Portland Pirates last season. He won 15 games as an AHL rookie.

Visentin played with the Niagara IceDogs of the OHL from the 2008-09 season to the 2011-12 season where he played in 166 games, had a record of 89-55-16 and had 4421 saves. In his final season with the IceDogs, he lead the team to the final round of the OHL playoffs.

He currently holds the team record for most wins as a goalie with 30 (in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 season) and best goals against average (1.99) during the 2011-12 season. He won the award for the OHL Goaltender of the Year for the 2010-11 season and the Dave Pinkney Trophy, with Christopher Festarini, for the lowest team goals against average.

Team Canada has also utilized Visentin twice during the World Junior Championships in 2011 and 2012. During the 2011 Championship, he initially backed-up Olivier Roy, but he replaced him after a loss against Sweden. He lead the team to wins against Switzerland and the United States, but during the Gold Medal round against Russia, he let in 5 goals in the third and Russia won 5-3. The next year, Team Canada won the Bronze medal with Visentin playing 200:08 and had a 1.43 goals against average, good for best in the tournament and a .944 save percentage, which was second best in the tournament.

Visentin is only 21 so he has a few years before he is ready to play for the NHL. The Coyotes hope his success in Juniors can translate to success in the NHL.
