Phoenix Coyotes Preseason Countdown: Re-emergence of the Podium

Bruce Bennett

With 48 days remaining until the Coyotes' first preseason game, we take a look back at how last year's 48-game season came about.

In 2013, the number 48 represents hope as Phoenix Coyotes fans eagerly await the start of a 2013-2014 season in Glendale that they were not sure would come. In 2012, the number 48 symbolized the number of games that were salvaged from the doldrums of the NHL lockout. (Fun fact: 48 was also the number of words in the preceding paragraph)

The 48-game season began in January after the lockout was lifted in the wee hours of the morning on January 6, 2013. No longer would fans analyze and satirize the elements on the infamous NHL logo-ed podium, no longer would fans debate the validity of "make whole" programs or where to Photoshop Dreger faces. It was back to hockey, at last.

However it was not all positive, as the Coyotes would go on to miss the playoffs for the first time in the Dave Tippett era. Finishing with a record of 21-18-9, the only thing the Yotes earned was the 12th overall pick that they eventually traded in for Max Domi.

Phoenix opens up its preseason on September 15 against the Los Angeles Kings en route to a full 82-game season. The last time they played a full season, the Coyotes were a mere seven wins away from hoisting the Stanley Cup.
