Phoenix Coyotes Preseason Countdown: 50 Days

USA TODAY Sports

For the first day of our Preseason Countdown, we look at how the number 50 has played a role in the history of the Phoenix Coyotes. To do that, we are going to have to go back to the 2009-2010 season.

In an 82-game season, winning 50 games is special. Fifty is also the number of days remaining until the Phoenix Coyotes play their first preseason game of the 2013-2014 season. With 50 days remaining, a look back at how the number 50 represents the best regular season in team history.

The 2009-2010 season was notable for a number of reasons: the Coyotes were in bankruptcy, Wayne Gretzky's tenure as head coach was over and Dave Tippett was hired to coach the owner-less team. Tippett would ultimately lead the team to a 50-win season, the most wins the Coyotes have ever had in Arizona. Glendale would finally experience playoff hockey as a result of the successes of the 09-10 season

Not only did the 50-win season mark the Yotes return to the playoffs, it was also the start of the Dave Tippett coaching era and it was the first year of the Coyotes bankruptcy era. Even though there were massive external pressures, the team found on-ice success resulting in one of the best regular season in franchise history.
