Monday Morning Musings: Yandle leading, Doan plans to get better

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

A new feature at Five for Howling - weekly thoughts and observations from Managing Editor Jaime Eisner about the Coyotes from covering the team.

After a red-hot start, especially at home, the Phoenix Coyotes are sliding -- losers of five of their last seven games. Poor starts and lack of discipline have pulled the Coyotes back into the logjam in the middle of the Pacific Division and Western Conference. Phoenix isn't panicking and hopes to right the ship as they tour through western Canada this week.

Here are a few tidbits and notes from the week that was in Coyotes hockey:

- The Coyotes have lost three consecutive games at home (0-2-1) for the first time since March 1-8 of 2012 (0-2-1).

- Discipline discipline discipline. A word discussed ad nauseam in the Coyotes' dressing room. Several players admit it's a team wide problem and it needs to be fixed, but not something they can't get control of.

- Dave Tippett explains why falling behind early is such a detriment to his team: "It takes you right out of structure...you have to take chances to try to get yourself back into the game - you open up yourself more."

- Phoenix's sports market was booming on Saturday night: 17,321 fans attended the Coyotes game, 12,957 fans attended the Suns game and 72,542 attended the ASU game.

- David Schlemko's game looks better and smoother now that he's back playing his natural position of LD. He was playing RD when paired with Rostislav Klesla.

- Keith Yandle is relishing the opportunity to teach young Connor Murphy since they have been paired together. "You take pride in helping him get better...anything I can do to help him push his game along and become a better player you try to do because guys like (Derek Morris) did that for me," Yandle said.

- Michael Stone has held his own on the team's top pairing since Zbynek Michalek got injured. He has averaged 21:41 of ice time in the last six games, while recording three points, two goals and nine hits.

- Shane Doan credits his fast offensive start to how well the Coyotes offense as a whole is playing, but he expects to get better as the season goes on.

- Radim Vrbata is quietly on a four-game point streak (2-3-5).

- The Coyotes will embark on a four-game road trip beginning on Tuesday. It is the first of two four-game road trips in the month of December.
