Arizona Sundogs Begin the Season North of the Border - Dog Caller: October 23, 2013

To start the 2013-2014 Season, the Arizona Sundogs traveled to Canada to face the Brampton Beast for three games in four days.

On Friday night, Arizona kicked off the CHL season with the first game played in Canada. The Brampton Beast entered the league through expansion this season and are based in the PowerAde Centre in Brampton, Ontario Canada.

Sundogs' forward Damian Surma would score the first goal at 5:25 of the opening period, assisted by Captain Jason Morgan. The Beast would score twice to take a one-goal lead into the first intermission. Brampton would score again early in the middle frame, but Arizona forward Kevin Baker would cut into their lead with a goal just six seconds later, assisted by Jason Morgan and Ryan Gaucher.

Mid-way through the game, Sundogs' forward Brodie Zuk would tie the game with a power play goal, assisted by Jordan Clendenning and Henric Hoglund. Brampton would score again before the end of the period, to once again take a lead into the break.

With just over a minute remaining in the game, Arizona Coach Kevin Collie would pull the goalie with his team on the penalty kill, and the Beast would score an empty-netter. Sundogs' forward Sebastian Geoffrion would cut the lead to one with an unassisted goal at 19:07, but Brampton would take home the 5-4 win.

The Sundogs totaled 25 shots on goal, and goalie Cam Lanigan made 32 saves on 36 shots.

The two teams met again on Sunday afternoon and neither team would find the back of the net in the first period. After a rash of fighting majors midway through the second period, Brampton would score a shorthanded goal and take that lead into the second intermission.

Five minutes into the third, Arizona defenseman Ryan Gaucher would even the score, assisted by Jason Morgan and Joe Tolles. Less than four minutes later, Sundogs' defenseman Justin Pender would give his team its first lead of the series.

At 19:18 of the third, Sundogs' forward Ian Shultz would put the game away with an unassisted empty-net goal get his team the 3-1 victory. Arizona had 20 shots on goal, and goalie Andrew Engelage turned away 25 of the 26 shots he faced.

Monday night the teams took the ice and once more, neither team would score in the first period. The Beast would score once in the second and three times in the third to take the 4-0 win. The Sundogs totaled 31 shots on goal, and goalie Cam Lanigan made 19 saves on 23 shots.

Big Dog of the Week

Every week, a Sundog player will be given the title of Big Dog of the Week for his top performance. This week, goaltender Andrew Engelage is collecting the honor for his performance in Arizona's win on Sunday. The Oshawa, Ontario native has a 1.00 GAA and 0.962 save percentage. Engelage was named 3rd Star of the Week for October 18-20 by the CHL for his 25 save performance.

Dog Bites

After the first three games of the season, Arizona is 1-2-0 and is in 7th place with two points.

The Sundogs' special teams have begun the season with an 11.11% power play percentage and an 87.50% penalty kill percentage, with 0 shorthanded goals scored and two allowed.

On 10/18 defenseman Mike Kavanagh was placed on 30-day I.R.; forward Jade Galbraith was placed on 14-day I.R.; forward Dion Campbell was placed on 14-day I.R.; and forward Darcy Verot was placed on 7-day I.R..

As the season gets under way, Captain Jason Morgan leads the team with 3 points, all from assists.

Arizona returns to Tim's Toyota Center for the first two home games of the season. The Sundogs will face the Missouri Mavericks on Friday and Saturday, with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. both nights.

On Friday, Arizona will wear specialty jerseys to honor the 19 fallen Granite Mountain Hotshot Firefighters. The jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following the game, with proceeds going to the families of the fallen. In addition, the ice will be colored purple to honor the Hotshots.
