Coyotes Sign Jeff Halpern to One-Year Deal

USA TODAY Sports

Coyotes find a veteran forward in newly signed Jeff Halpern.

Today it was announced that the Coyotes have signed 37 year old free agent Jeff Halpern to a one year two way  contract. Halpern originally went undrafted and he began his career in the 1999-2000 season.  He has played with six NHL teams during his 13-year career including the Washington Capitals, the Los Angeles Kings, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Dallas Stars, and most recently the Montreal Canadiens.  Over the summer he signed with the SM-liiga team TPS which included an NHL out clause allowing him to return to the US if signed by an NHL team.

In his 907 NHL games he has scored 147 goals, has 214 assists and 361 points.  He has also played in 39 playoff games where he has 7 goals and 7 assists for a total of 14 points.  Last season he spent time with both the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens and in 46 games between the two clubs he went 1-2-3 and had 10 penalty minutes.

Halpern is likely going to be a checking forward who won't be expected to create a lot of offense but will likely give the Coyotes some depth in the lower lines.
