Kevin Petovello takes the draw against Allen Americans - Valerie Haugh
The Arizona Sundogs faced the Allen Americans in three games, two at home and one on the road this past week. Allen is the top team in the league and all of Arizona's games against them this year have been both tough and exciting.
On Friday night, the top goal scorer in the CHL, Sundogs' forward Chad Nehring continued his hot streak with a goal early in the first period, assisted by Jason Morgan and Derek LeBlanc. Arizona forward Jeff Kyrzakos would double his team's lead, assisted by Johan Ryd and Zack Firlotte, still in the opening frame. Allen would get on the board late in the first, score one in the second, and then one early in the third to take the lead. With only twelve seconds left in regulation and the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Arizona defenseman Matt McCready would tie the game, assisted by Chad Langlais and Jeff Kyrzakos. Just 1:43 into the extra frame, Sundogs' forward Kevin Petovello would find the back of the net, assisted by Matt Register and Ron Myers, and give Arizona the 4-3 victory. Arizona totaled 42 shots on goal, and goalie Adam Russo made 27 saves on 30 shots.
Allen would get the only goal in the opening period on Saturday night. With his team on the power play, Sundogs' forward Chad Nehring would tie the game midway through the second period, assisted by Matt McCready and Ron Myers. The Americans would retake the lead early in the third period and hold on for the 2-1 win. The Sundogs had 48 shots on goal, and goalie Adam Russo turned away 44 of the 46 shots he faced.
The two teams would then travel to Texas for a midday game on Monday. Arizona forward Kevin Petovello would get his team on the board, assisted by Cody Purves and Ron Myers, with a goal early in the first. Three minutes later, forward Ron Myers would extend the Sundogs lead, assisted by Kevin Petovello and Cody Purves. The Americans would score one in the first period and the only goal in the second to tie the game. Late in the third, Ron Myers would light the lamp once again, assisted by Chad Langlais and Kevin Petovello, and earn his team the 3-2 victory. Arizona totaled 33 shots on goal, and goalie David Brown made 20 saves on 22 shots. Unable to find the back of the net, Sundogs' forward Chad Nehring's 13 game point streak would come to an end Monday.
Forty games into the season, Arizona is 18-18-4 and is in 8th place with 40 points, 14 points out of 1st place.
The Sundogs' special teams currently has a 11.76% power play percentage and an 80.47% penalty kill percentage with 4 shorthanded goals scored and 2 allowed.
On 1/17 defenseman Paul Kurceba signed a contract and forward Joe Dusbabek was waived; On 1/18 forward Andrew Coles signed a contract.
Forward Chad Nehring leads the Sundogs in both goals (27) and points (42). His 27 goals have moved Nehring into the top goal scoring position in the CHL.
Arizona plays the Tulsa Oilers tonight before returning home to play the Quad City Mallards on Friday and Saturday nights. The puck drops at 7:05 pm both nights at Tim's Toyota Center.
