Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Coyotes Tracks - February 1, 2012 - Cogliano'd

GLENDALE, AZ - JANUARY 31: Referee Dan O'Halloran signals for a disallowed goal from the Phoenix Coyotes during the thrid period of the NHL game against the Anaheim Ducks at Jobing.com Arena on January 31, 2012 in Glendale, Arizona. The Ducks defeated the Coyotes 4-1. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

The Phoenix Coyotes took a step backwards on Tuesday evening in Glendale. Poor play, poor officiating, and porous goaltending by Mike Smith created an ugly 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. The Yotes will be forced to stew about missed opportunities, especially on the power play (broken record?) as they don't play again until the weekend.

We've got postgame recaps, reaction, plus news from around the NHL for you in today's Tracks.

sorry to say it, but this team is just not good enough.

this season has been hard to watch for me, it seems like they are not playing as hard as last season, and they are not nearly as solid on defense. And what is with all of the mental mistakes? I hate being the pessimistic guy, but I just do not see this year ending well without moves that bring in more offensive talent. A league worst power play is a recipe for disaster, and it doesn’t seem to be making any progress. If they can’t start capitalizing more on those chances, this is not a top-8 team in the west.

I both agree and disagree. The team seems to lack consistent energy, loses focus late in periods, and has had their share of mental mistakes. The scoring and power play concerns continue (I’m starting to lose track of when they weren’t an issue). I disagree about the defense aspect. Their D numbers are very similar to last season. I think the D corps minus Yandle and Morris have played extremely well. I think the forward support could be better at times, but overall I’m satisfied with the defense.

I really should've said late-game defense...

I do not feel that same sense of security when the Coyotes have a lead this year. The past few years, if they had a lead, it was likely they were going to win, this year. not so much. That was really their bread and butter, as their offense really cannot make up for a poor start, so maintaining good starts is key…

Oh, well in that case we are on the same page. They really have struggled to close out games.

Sad, but not entirely surprising. Apologies to you and anyone else for having to read all the garbage in that thread.
