The Phoenix Coyotes first round pick in 2011, Connor Murphy, got a nice Christmas present today. He was officially listed on Team USA's roster for the World Junior Championships. The young defensemen has had a bit of a rough time with injuries both before and after he was drafted. He appeared to finally have luck on his side this year until he was hit with a puck in the Team USA's last preliminary game prior to the World Juniors this past weekend. The fact USA Hockey put his name on today's roster likely means the injury wasn't serious and that they expect Murphy to play in the tournament.
The American blueliner already has 18 points in 33 games playing for the Srnia Sting in the OHL this season. The U-20 World Juniors will not be the defensemen's first time putting on a Team USA jersey in a world competition. He helped lead the U-18 team to a gold medal in 2011.
The IHHF World Junior Championships begin tomorrow and run through January 5th. This year's tournament will be taking place in Ufa, Russia. All of Team U.S.A. games will be televised live on the NHL Network in the United States and streamed on NHL.com. For a list of the games the network will be carrying as well as times click here.
