Facing-off against the first year Denver Cutthroats, the Arizona Sundogs owned the ice in their three game series this past week.
The Arizona Sundogs played a three game home stand against the Denver Cutthroats this week and the Sundogs brought their brooms as they swept the series.
The two teams met for the first time on Wednesday night. Denver struck first with a goal early in the opening period. Arizona evened things up with a goal by forward Jeff Kyrzakos, assisted by Mario Larocque and Cody Purves, midway and the teams went into the first intermission tied. Sundogs' forward Derek LeBlanc would find the back of the net early in the second, assisted by Kyle Chipchura and Chad Nehring, but the Cutthroats would tie it up again just two minutes later. Arizona forward Kyle Schussler would give his team the lead again midway through the period, assisted by Kyle Chipchura. The Sundog's lead would increase to two with forward Jeff Kyrzakos's second of the night, assisted by Jason Morgan and Chad Nehring, before the second intermission. In the third, Denver would cut the deficit with a power play goal, but Arizona forward Chad Nehring would light the lamp, assisted by Kyle Chipchura and Derek LeBlanc, and give the Sundogs a 5-3 victory. Arizona had 42 shots on goal, and goalie Adam Russo turned away 23 of the 26 shots he faced.
Arizona and Denver faced-off again on Friday night. This time it would be the Sundogs scoring early with a goal by forward Johan Ryd, assisted by Mikael Bedard and Zack Firlotte, less than three minutes into the game. Forward Jeff Kyrzakos would continue his hot streak with a power play goal at 7:18, assisted by Kyle Hood and Jason Morgan, and then an even strength goal at 11:40, assisted by Adam Smyth and David Schlemko. Denver would score once before the first intermission. With the man-advantage early in the second period, Arizona would net its second power play goal of the night, courtesy of defenseman Mario Larocque, assisted by Jason Morgan and Kyle Hood. Midway through the game and with a teammate in the penalty box, Sundogs' forward Chad Nehring would score short handed, assisted by Kyle Chipchura and Davis Schlemko. Denver would score once in the third, but the Sundogs would come away with the 5-2 victory on the night. Arizona totaled 39 shots on goal, and goalie David Brown made 32 saves on 34 shots.
Saturday night would see the two teams meet again and Arizona forward Kyle Schussler would get the only goal of the first period, assisted by Derek LeBlanc and Kyle Chipchura. Midway through the second frame, Sundogs' forward Mikael Bedard would light the lamp, assisted by Zack Firlotte and Don Maloney Jr. Just 35 seconds later, Arizona forward Kyle Chipchura would score his first of the season, assisted by Chad Nehring. The Cutthroats would score once before the second intermission and then once early in the third period. Arizona would get the next two however, the first by forward Derek LeBlanc, assisted by Kyle Chipchura and Chad Nehring, and the second by Kyle Chipchura, unassisted. Denver would score the next one, but Sundogs' forward Johan Ryd would find the back of the net, assisted by Mikael Bedard and Don Maloney Jr., to maintain his teams' lead. Denver would score one more before the final buzzer, but Arizona would claim the 6-4 victory. Arizona had 38 shots on goal, and goalie Adam Russo turned away 41 of the 45 shots he faced.
Ten games into the season; Arizona is 6-2-2 and is in 2nd place. With only 10 teams in the CHL this year, all teams are in one conference, the Berry Conference.
The Sundogs' special teams currently has a 14.89% power play percentage and an 83.72% penalty kill percentage with 2 shorthanded goals scored and none allowed.
Roster moves - On 11/6 forward Derek LeBlanc was acquired by trade from Missouri; On 11/7 forward Don Maloney Jr. was waived, forward Derek LeBlanc signed a contract, defenseman David Schlemko was activated from bereavement leave, forward Pascal Morency was moved from 7-day IR to 14-day IR, and forward Jake Hauswirth was placed on 7-day IR; on 11/9 defenseman Gord Burnett was moved from 7-day IR to 14-day IR, forward Don Maloney Jr. signed a contract, goalie Mike Spillane was waived, and defenseman Karl Linden was moved from 14-day IR to 30-day IR.

On 11/13 forward Kyle Chipchura was named the Oakley Central League Hockey Player of the Week for the period ending 11/11/2012. During that week, Chipchura had 2 goals, 6 assists and was a +7. Currently, Kyle leads the entire CHL with his +11 +/- rating.
Arizona takes to the road for four games this week. On Tuesday they face the Rapid City Rush, on Wednesday and Friday the Denver Cutthroats, and the Wichita Thunder on Saturday.
