KHL's Yaroslavl Lokomotiv Team Charter Reportedly Crashes in Russia

Puck Daddy's Dimitry Chesnokov reported earlier this morning that the plane reportedly carrying Lokamotiv's team to Minsk crashed and as many as 36 of the 37 people on board were killed. The team's new coach this season is former Coyotes player and former NHL assistant coach Brad McCrimmon. In addition, his former teammate from the inaugural Coyotes squad, Igor Korolev was on the coaching staff. Here is a link to the roster listed on the team's website. Coyotes fans will likely remember former Duck and Red Wing Ruslan Salei as well as former NHL all-star Pavol Demitra.

We'll do our best to continue to update you as more information becomes available.

Update: Various media outlets are now reporting 43 people died in the crash. However, I haven't seen official confirmation of the number from the Russian government or the team.

Update: Statement from the KHL on the crash.

McCrimmon played for the Coyotes during the first season in Phoenix.

Terrible tragedy

Wikipedia already has an article up, stating who was on board. According to the article, only Alexander Galimov survived. (his wikipedia page says he is the only confirmed survivor…)

Yes, he did.

Looks very similar to a report I saw a bit earlier online. However, I would be leery of taking anything on Wikipedia as truth much less involving something that happened just hours ago. As per usual with a breaking news story like this the initial reports tend to have inaccuracies.

True.

Just like how last Jan. 8th all the national media was reporting Giffords was dead when in reality she was still in surgery (which is what the local news reported).

Exactly. Happens almost every time with almost any major news event. Nature of the beast.

Jame Mirtle is reporting that Pavol Demitra’s agent has confirmed Demitra died in the plane crash.

Terrible, terrible news...

My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy… =[

Typos you'd rather avoid: "I would never listen to him about not eating a hockey player."

There’s been a lot about how bad the NFL, NBA, and College football offseasons have been, but hockey’s seems to be the worst. My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Russia. What a terrible thing to happen.

Sad story...

Curious, though:

Pryanishnikov said the plane was manufactured in 1993 and was certified airworthy until October 1.
Is it normal for planes to be used for 15+ years?

Yes. I’m not an aircraft expert by any means, but my limited understanding is that in terms of structural integrity issues the biggest concern with aircraft is metal fatigue. Therefore the age in years of an aircraft is much less important than the number of times it has been used (pressurized).

Nope.

The average age of Southwest Airlines’ fleet is 15 years. The difference is the Boeing 737 is built a lot better than the plane the team was flying on. Plus, aircraft maintenance and pilot training standards are a lot higher in the United States than in Russia. The FAA is very good at preventing unsafe planes from getting in the air.

Indeed. I don’t always agree with him, but I think Adam Proteau was speaking for me and many others with this tweet today.
