Glendale $25 million again?
Is the city really doing this again? I doubt the NHL will want to operate this team again. 36.6m in losses last year. Big vote Tuesday. Likely will pass. Do we really think the NHL is going to be ok with this team costing them another 10+ million. The board of governors will not allow this to continue. Bettman will have to bring an end to this. The city is only delaying the inevitable. Cut this money losing team loose and let them leave town. Go D-Backs!

Yes Again !
Any time the city can buy the better it is for working out some sort of agreement. Paying $25 Million right now not only saves the Coyotes for another year, but most likely the entire City. The loses if the team leaves don’t even technically have a measurement. With the NFL locked out, the potentional for Westgate to turn into a DEADZONE is more realistic than any other senerio. By way of comparison it would take the team 46 years to lose the money Glendale would be losing in the first few years if the team leaves.
Go D-Backs!
…sorry I can’t echo your sentiment there when you are advocating COG give up on the Coyotes. I don’t like baseketball, but I would be sad to hear the Suns leaving (even though I can’t name a single current sun. Staudemire?)

If that were the case, wouldn’t cities be lining up to pay professional sports franchises to come to them? If an NHL team was an automatic boon to a city’s bank accounts, don’t you think Kansas City, Las Vegas, Seattle and Houston would all be trying to lure the Coyotes to them with even more favourable deals?
Thats not what he's saying
Don’t use the strawman arguement of ‘if it was an automatic boon’, Skii’s point (and its a good point) – if Glendale loses the Coyotes they will lose more money than the $25m.

Ok – but if the answer is so obvious, why is there any dissent at all? If the question comes down to, “Lose $25 million or lose $100 million,” how is the answer not obvious to everyone on council, and everyone in town?
Well isn't it actually lose $25+$???million or lose $100 million?
Because they stand to lose money even if the team stays.
But the team earned more money last year than ever
They also attracted a lot more fans. All without knowing if they’d be in Phoenix next season.
This gives us all hope that, if they can show that kind of improvement without being able to promise the fans that they’ll stay, they’ll be able to do more with a dedicated Owner.
The team lost $36 million last year
Not sure how you can say they’re “making money”

Excuse me? Earned more money?
Are seriously selling this? The teamed lost a total of 36.6 million last season! I don’t see any earnings there! The “dedicated owner” you talk about is being given $197 million by COG to buy a team for $170 million. No wonder he is dedicated!

Are you really trying to say
They lost less money than ever before? Because they’ve never actually made money.

Technially
Since your wanting to play Mr Stick-Up-His-Ass – the Team has ‘made’ money every single year.
The team made, say, $70 million last year
The operating costs were, say, $106 Million
Leading to a net loss of $36 Million
BUT They still made that $70 Million.
In other words, stop being so fucking picky with the wording and acknowledge the goddam point.

No
“Making money” implies profit was made net, and as you point out no net profit has ever been made by the Coyotes. It’s not a matter of being picky, it’s a matter of not being disingenuous.
The only way to say it without making it look like it a bad attempt at spin or bold face lying, is to say they lost less last year.
We can spend as long as we want arguing back and forth about the exact words we should use, or we can agree to disagree and acknowledge that there is a valid point in there.

Indeed
The takeaways are that the Yotes have never made their owners any money, but that they were hemorrhaging less last year than some more recent years.

“Making money” is what the Fed does.
All of you are wrong.
;-)
It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

Calm Down?
You meant they Made more money than ever before? Hello! They LOST 36.6 Million. That is making none , zero, zilch. If they MADE money, the city wouldn’t have to fork over 25 million. Obviously you don’t know what the difference is between making money and losing money. Maybe you should put a bid in on the team.
Their losses were smaller last year than in previous years. Is that how you’d like it worded?
I think we all know the point Skii was trying to make so you can stop being the grammar nazi. I think that job is taken by MDO. Confirmation on that????
Even with the losses, the arena rent was paid, along with a whole bunch of other small items that concerns Glendale’s bottom line & not the team’s. The payment of those bills comes directly to the taxpayers as soon as the Coyotes leave as well as the rest of the area dying a slow, miserable death costing more money from my pocket.
I prefer the gamble of paying a bit more now to get someone in here that actually gives the team the chance it hasn’t had while in this state.

Yes, that is MDO's job.
He can’t even reply correctly, I wouldn’t worry about him. Don’t respond and he’ll go away.

Oh My
Damn the city council is a bunch of suckers. Do you think I could get some $$$ out of them? I’d be happy with 50k.
Can we get a few things straight...
In honor of Mayor Scruggs and all that is holy…
The vote that was made by the City Council on Tuesday was that the City of Glendale would cover up to $25 Million of potential losses by the Coyotes that may be incurred during the 2011-2012 season IF AND ONLY IF, they fail to sell the team to a new owner before the amounts become due. The City of Glendale is responsible for $0 if Matthew Hulsizer or any other ownership group buys the team before the end of the 2011-2012 season. The $25 Million that they paid to the NHL recently was something they agreed to before the 2010-2011 season even started.
So let’s not confuse everything: the City of Glendale’s decisions was losses totaling an unknown (but likely high) millions of dollars in revenue from sales tax/rent/parking/etc. if the Coyotes leave vs. up to $25 Million (but likely $0 because they are anticipating completing the deal to sell the team before this money would be due).
Everyone got it?? Good.
