PrintI figured the best way to pass time while having writer's block is to write. Probably not a logical idea, but I'm going with the flow today. I realized since I starting contributing here at Five For Howling back in the Fall that I haven't fully introduced myself. Yes, Travis did a great intro piece on me, but that isn't what I mean. What I mean is introduce the "hockey me". Hockey fans like most sports fans love talking the sport and comparing opinions. If you are reading this I'm assuming you do as well. Part of sharing opinions is talking about what teams and players you love/hate. Check out my choices below.

Favorite NHL team – Phoenix Coyotes. I have a passing affliation with a number of other teams – initally was a Blackhawks fan, now consider myself a fairweather fan of Tampa and Calgary.

for a number of years – one of my teammates when I was playing in youth leagues died when he was 12 so wore it to honor him.
When I joined my current team 12 wasn’t available so I switched to 13 – my age when my friend died.

Ben Davis, a catcher, bunted to break up Schillings perfect game
in the 8th inning in 2001 or so. I was only 15 or 16.
Last year Cabrera (?) intentionally spiked Mark Reynolds and then when Reynolds reacted he ran away like a wuss. I am sure there are various other incidents.

Many deaths attributed to that conflict. No seriously, go over there and say you are a Dbacks fan and it is grounds for banning.

If you lived in Colorado you would understand the excitement for a possible Forsberg return...
The guy was insanely good in his prime. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to come back, he was forced out after some ridiculous injuries, he even had his damn spleen removed in the playoffs one year. He isn’t pulling a “Favre” I would compare it more to a “Grant Hill” if he actually is able to come back and contribute… An amazing player that had a HOF career cut short due to injury, that finds a way to fight back and give it a few more years. He looked capable in the olympics, so I’m excited to see if he can last physically, because if he can, he is a very exciting player to watch. And I guess I’m partial to the “flopper” label he was given by other team’s fans simply because I was rooting for him, kinda like a Spurs fan blind to the fact that Ginobili is worse than a World Cup soccer player flailing on the ground holding his shin when he clearly didn’t even get touched.

I'm not sure how any Coyotes fan could not have listed the Red Wings as a top 5 "dislike" team...
I guess I hate them more than most because I’m from Colorado and grew up an Avalanche fan. The Claude Lemieux vs Lapointe/Mccarty (well the whole Red Wings organization really) was really fun to watch, and the hate between the two teams guaranteed a grudge match every game. There were some great games and both teams were contenders year in and year out. Look back at the teams that those two organizations put out each year and its almost like they had all-star teams. Really fun rivalry that I hope gets re-heated one of these days when the Avs can put together a contender again… (Though I hope its not at the Coyotes expense:)
In my opinion
I usually hate a player first before hating a team. To be honest, that’s a terrible way of hating, because it makes no sense to bring a team into it, but that’s how I do things. And since I respect certain players on the Wings, I can’t really genuinely hate them.

I respect the organization and how they have run things. In addition, minus Todd Bertuzzi I’ve liked/respected almost every player they’ve employed the last 2 decades. I don’t pull for them, but they are fun to watch.

I have an Yzerman jersey given to me when The Yotes were still in Winnipeg.
(of course, it was way to big at the time. I also had a Messier jersey, but it “disappeared.”)

I get it, but I'm kinda backwords I guess...
For instance I don’t hate Mike Modano, or Datsyuk, or Holmstrom, or really any of the players on an individual level (with the exception of Bertuzzi and Mccarty when he was around), but I do hate the team as a whole… The fans don’t help much either. My thought on Brett Hull never changed when he played for the Wings, but I did start rooting against his team, nothing against him, just the team he played for.
I’m in between on certain teams. As I get older I’m less likely to get excitable about much in the way of hate. The Pennsylvania teams are the rare exception. Too much history to ignore.

Honorable Mention – Rangers. It’s hard for me to get my feelings on the Rangers straight. They are my dad’s favorite team and I grew up loving them, but ever since Sather took over (around the time I moved to Philadelphia for school), he has dismantled everything that was good about the organization and turned it into crap. I HATE HATE HATE John Tortarella and wish nothing but ill for the current team, but I absolutely adore the Rangers from when I was a kid from the Kelly Kisio days through the Stanley Cup team in 1994 and the underperforming squads of the late 90s before Gretzky. After I started to get into the Flyers (which I can trace to the 2000 playoff run and the 5 OT game against the Penguins that I watched while writing a finals paper on European Intellectual History of the 19th Century), I tried to maintain my fandom for both squads (with shared enemies in New Jersey and Pittsburgh), but after Sather traded Leetch to Toronto, I just couldn’t do it any more.
