SB Nation Arizona Editor's Pick
How active will the Coyotes be on the Trade Deadline?
With the Trade Deadline on February 28th quickly approaching, will the Coyotes make any moves to further solidify an already solid roster? Last season, GM Maloney brought in Lee Stempniak and Derek Morris, and we took the Pacific division. (Not just because of those two players).
This season, the Pacific division leader seems to change daily, with Dallas, Anaheim, San Jose and Los Angeles all within striking distance.
Who will the Coyotes try and get this season to secure the Pacific and home ice for the majority of the playoffs?
Will the Coyotes get anyone? Do we need anyone, or is the current roster, winners of five in a row, deep enough to bring the cup to the desert?
What do you think my fellow Coyotes faithful?

Wow Dustin Penner?
I could see Penner of Hejduk being very valuable, for different reasons. Penner would be great to matchup against divisional foes like Ryan Getzlaf. He is like a more talented Martin Hanzal with his size and tangible gifts. Hejduk would be a huge upgrade to the power play with his scoring prowess. He and the Wizard together would be unbelievable, and considering the Coyotes and Avalanche do not shy away from being trading partners, I could see that deal happening… Its a matter of cost really. I do not have time to look up each player’s salary and if its even reasonable to think that the Yotes could take on more of it, but I do think that the Yotes are one clutch scorer away from being a very dangerous team come playoff time. I think that Rozy shored up the defense quite well, so the amount of moves I see GMDM making is most likely one, with maybe some moves for future prospects if the opportunity comes. If they stand pat I would not be too disappointed, but I definitely do not want to see a major shakeup, just a solid addition so that the Yotes have another 20 goal guy. Easier said than done.
How about Stephen Weiss?
He would be a huge upgrade to the Coyotes offensive unit, and I hear he is available (for a steep price). Do the Coyotes really need their #1 draft pick this year? It seems like they are full of prospects and could afford to use it to get a proven vet like either of the three mentioned above as long as they wouldn’t be a half-year rental…. Thoughts?
For a player of his Talent
Weiss is actually worth the money. I think if we could fit him in he would be a tremendous boost at the center position. He does have a no trade clause in his contract though, which might make it harder to convince him to move to Phoenix. I would love it though.

Our problem
is budget
When this sale closes I could see us picking up some peices. We don’t have much in tradable assests but we could look at a package with some picks maybe.

that was my thinking...
Between the SA boys and Gormley, it seems that the Yotes have a handful of nice prospects. If they push for another high seeding in the playoffs, their 1st rounder is going to be around 25th or so, which is usually a 2-3 year project at best. If the prospect pool was shallow, I would say keep it and acquire more young talent, but at that point in the draft with hockey, its a crapshoot, so gaining a proven vet that could contribute “now” is worth it in my eyes… I would normally never say trade away your top pick, but when you are only a piece or two away to really contending, you can’t sit back and hope that Boedker, Maclean, Gormley, Tikhonov, etc all start turning into 40-50 point scorers (well Gormley is a defender so he doesn’t count), but you see what I’m saying. If you could get a Hejduk, Weiss, or Penner for your first rounder and maybe a throw-in, then I’d say do it… But I would hate to see anyone in the current lineup go, but to make room it would almost have to happen…
Jovo on IR
does that impact whether he is tradeable or not? I think he is going to be out a few weeks, it will impact his trade value, but I also think GMDM needs to seriously consider trading him out now. What are the odds he resigns at a huge discount this summer? Not likely, especially with Bryz coming due for a huge contract as well. So will he be that valuable to the team the rest of this year? What if you could get a serviceable D-man in a trade that could contribute right away if you shipped him out?
I think we need to trade for a scoring forward and a defenseman at this point.
I do not think Jovo will have much, if any value, he would be a playoff plus a few regular game rental. To bad IRL, is not a video game, though lol.

Not sure we make any moves
I don’t post often, but I truly believe we make very few moves at the trade deadline.
The major issue at hand for the ‘Yotes is what do we give up that makes our team better in both the short term and long term. Trading a player like Turris or Boedker may improve us now for a rental player, but we’ve made mistakes with players such as Briere before, and the rental player is not a guarantee to stay. If we are going to be wrong about any of our young players, this still isn’t the time to trade them. We still have next year or the draft to work them into trades.
With our defense having the glut of players and prospects, I would have said that a defenseman that is just about ready to make the jump is our most tradeable asset. But Jovo being out makes that a near impossibility.
The only type of trade that can make any sense is one where we improve our D, but still pick up players with a good future in the league to replace the ones we’d have to give up. Something like a Turris/Ahnelov/5th for Liles/Winnik/AHL defenseman. I doubt we’d consider that route, so I say stand pat, and we can move some people in the off-season if we don’t feel comfortable going forward with the player…
I don't think so either
I can’t imagine anyone on the poll list joining our team, yet I can’t imagine anyone on our current roster leaving either. We no longer have someone like Prucha who Tippet just like scratching or Wolski who has an unbelievably bad stump with no signs he’ll get out. Jovo has no value at all, and he’s getting too old now with all this flu shit. If anything, we need better goaltending so we should trade for Nabokov.
