Coyotes Tracks - December 9, 2011 - "D" estroyed
To quote Ron Burgandy "Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast!". Two quick goals in the first 3 minutes and another three was all the offence the Red Wings needed to seal the victory over the Coyotes. On the bright side the Coyotes finished the road trip 2 out of 3 and as Meatloaf says that "Aint bad".

The first period of that game was just terrible. Defense especially was bad, although the offense wasn’t much better. Detroit seemed to have control of the puck for most of the period. The Coyotes did look better from the second period on though, and I would say that they were the better team in the latter two periods, but Detroits control of the first period killed them
worst period I've seen them play all year.
by far. mistakes, sloppy, and simply outworked. A team like the Coyotes cannot afford to be outworked by more offensively skilled teams, even for a period. I guess we may just need to get used to Mike Smith laying a stinker of a period every so often too… I’ll take that over inconsistent play, which he for the most part has not done at all. Not everyone can be on every night, but wow that was just a terrible first period across the board. Hope they rebound and get a win against the “#1” team in the NHL on Saturday. I couldn’t even type that with a straight face. I just don’t see the Wild keeping up their pace, but if they do, all I can say is “its about time” and “nice trade”…
self-correction
A team like the Coyotes cannot afford to be outworked by more offensively skilled teams anyone, even for a period.
I completely agree with part of this, because that’s what happened with the Winnipeg game, they out worked them for one period and it was a team that the Coyotes destroyed when they were here. I will kinda disagree with laying all the blame on Smith though for the first period, the defense was terrible that first and especially the first 2 goals it seemed like there weren’t enough people in front. You can’t allow someone to get that kind of puck possession right in front of the goalie, because there is just so many ways that they can go. Although I will admit that at the time it seemed like Smith should have maybe blocked the last two but at that point you just let two in there is probably a confidence lost.
I would be careful there
Minnesota reminds me a lot of the Coyotes two years ago. Not expected to do much of anything, they’re riding some really hot goaltending and a very balanced scoring attack. I think a lot of teams are underestimating them. Phoenix better not do the same.
I think as soon as they are the top team in the NHL people stop underestimating, at least I would hope that any team worth their salt would not estimate them. I haven’t watched a single game of theirs though so I don’t know what their style is so I don’t want the game is going to be like, I will be there though and enjoying the dollar hot dogs and beer.
