Yotes Need To Start A Goaltender Search
Mike Smith is not the answer. He is far too inconsistant. Send out a search party ASAP before its too late. Smith has proven that he is a very capable backup goaltender but it ends there. Far too many "bad" goals at the most inopportune times. 6 goals allowed in the last 5 minutes of games this season. A good starter shuts the door down the stretch. Lets get talking to Vancouver about Corey Schneider.

I'm not pushing the panic button just yet
I would like to see more consistency from the defense before I start passing judgment on Smith. There were a couple of breakdowns in this game that probably wouldn’t have made that last goal matter. If they tighten up on D and Smith is still losing games, then maybe we have a problem. Plus it’s not like Bryzgalov never surrendered soft goals.

I agree it seems like so many of the goals are because of lapses in defense. There are definitely goals that Smith lets in that I would say are soft goals but most of them seem to be goals where the Defense should have eliminated the scoring opportunity before it even got to Smith. It seems like a very popular thing to blame the goaltender when the team losses a game.
Yes I do agree there have been defensive breakdowns and as a defenceman myself it sure is nice when your goaltender bails you out. That’s what makes a good starter. Most scoring opportunities are caused by breakdowns. The breakdown against the Rangers was brutally obvious. But the backhander from the side boards from Richards was even more painful to watch go under Smith’s glove. I was Smith’s biggest supporter when he got here but now I’m having second thoughts. I’m the last person that usually blames the goaltender but this is getting concerning. I’ve seen this movie before. Can you say Luongo? But point well taken guys. We DO have to cut down on the defensive lapses. Especially in the last 5 miutes. I will continue to support Mike Smith but lets start kicking some tires just in case.
First off I disagree with you, I am Smith’s biggest supporter from the start haha.
To me its a matter of how much time do we want to give Smith to see how he is long term with the team, and I think it is foolish that people continue to suggest a change when he hasn’t even played with the team for a full season. His numbers are still pretty good, he is a top ten in games played, wins, losses, goals against, shots against, shoot outs, and saves. I would say that if he continues to be somewhat inconsistent during his second season with the team it may be time to start scouting some prospects, but at least give him until the end of the season.
I was under the impression he was a stop gap solution until Visentin was ready?

Visentin? Really?
Visentin will never amount to anything at the NHL level. If he’s your big hope I feel sorry for you. Cory Schneider from VAN is a much better choice if you can get him but I think VAN will dump Luongo and his huge salary soon and end up keeping Scheids. Visentin showed his mettle against Russia at the last WJC – you couldn’t pay me to put him in net.

The other thing to think about I guess is
who do we trade for? Do we have anything a team like Vancouver would want in exchange for Corey Schneider? Is Nabokov worth going for? Another young guy like Braden Holtby from the Caps who also doesn’t have a lot of experience either? It doesn’t seem like there are a whole lot of options out there for Phoenix.
by AhwatukeeCoyote on Dec 20, 2011 4:02 PM MST reply actions
Nabokov is not an option. Neither is Holtby. Phoenix has that 2nd round choice from Ottawa that may be attractive to Vancouver for Schneider. He is the best backup out there who should be a starter somewhere. Heck we could even throw Torres in. I’m sure they would take him back. PS…Barbs’ performance in the 3rd against Florida is exactly what I’ve been talking about. Thats what got this post started.
We have given a back up that should be starting somewhere a chance in the past....
I am all aboard if Vancouver is willing to listen for more than 12 seconds…

The problems is the Canucks are going to want a ton. Teams have been pestering them for at least 2 years about Schneider.
As for Smith, I see no reason to panic just because the team had a couple of bad games in front of him. Most of the “bad” goals this team has given up have been due to defensive breakdowns not the goalies.

Vancouver is already on record saying they wouldn’t look at anything less than a high 2nd rounder or better AND a top 6 forward or defenceman for Schneider. The 2nd rounder from Ottawa and a defenceman would essentially be Schneider for Turris. Good deal. We cannot give up a top 6 forward. This situation is more urgent than most teams because if we miss the playoffs this year I truly beleive we will lose the team.
I think that if the ownership situation hasn’t been settled before the trade deadline, then the team is moving. Glendale is already on record saying that they won’t front another $25 million to keep the team here without an owner and the NHL, I think, needs to settle this situation by early next year as they are planning both realignment and the schedule. If one of these two groups (Reinsdorf and Jamison) can’t get it straightened out by February, I don’t think a trip to the playoffs is going to do anything to save this team.
All that being said, I don’t see us moving the right pieces to get Schneider from Vancouver…I think, for better or worse, we are pretty much making this run with Smith and Barbs…hopefully Smith will be back after the holiday break and we can go from there.

Sharks fan here
What do you guys think of Antero Niittymaki? Our goaltending depth is pretty stacked here in SJ with our farm system combined with Niemi and Greiss.
Interested? If so, what do you think Don Maloney could offer Doug WIlson in return?
Don’t see Maloney making a move in the division for a goalie. I love Niitty from his time in Philly, but don’t think he is worth making a deal for at this time.

Smith looking good since his return but don’t expect him to win any shootouts. One of the lowest percentages in the league. BTW…EL in the SO???

I attended the Detroit and Tampa games and I have to say that I feel even stronger about the goaltending situation that looks like it’s going to cost us a playoff spot. Smith is no longer in any of the top 10 categories that the dude mentioned earlier. As a matter of fact he’s 3rd from the bottom in OT/SO losses. That’s where Bryz got us in. But we all know that Bryz couldn’t get it done in the playoffs.
Huh, Smitty going for an NHL record tonight, most wins in a row allowing 1 goal or less in every game. I DEFINITELY think the Yotes need to start a goalie search.

This post is Hilarious come February 26.
bcyotesfan, you need to come back on and officially apologize for your horrible evaluation of goalie talent. Say what you want about his wandering puck play, but the coyotes wouldn’t be on this stretch they are on without him. He has been solid at worst and spectacular at best. Not to mention the guys in the locker room enjoy him much more than they ever did Bryzgalov. How is Bryz doing this year btw?
by Superfizzogotflow on Feb 26, 2012 11:01 AM MST reply actions
I don’t need to apologize because my evaluation at the time was accurate as is your evaluation now. This is the nature of the game. Glad I was wrong and hope he continues the stellar play. His wandering is the least of my concerns because its an advantage most of the time. He just has to pick up on what teams are jumping on him and causing the turnover ie..Dallas.
It looks like the real Mike smith is back. Can we get that guy back who was disguised as him in February. 1 month doesn’t cut it. That’s been his knock his whole carreer. Signs of brilliance then the exact opposite. You desperate Mike Smith supporters need to wake up! This is the NHL.
Smith’s play in March has been similar to his play in February. The vast majority of goals scored on Smith in the last week have been the result of bad turnovers, defensive breakdowns and mental lapses by his teammates. Same as in February. In addition, even if this wasn’t the case, by any reasonable metric Smith would have been having an excellent season. Of course, that was true when you originally put up this post.
