Wolski Traded For Rozsival

In yet another trade in the history of the Coyotes-Rangers partnership, the Phoenix Coyotes have traded LW Wojtek Wolski to the New York Rangers for veteran defenseman Michal Rozsival. Rozsival has missed the past 2 games with a rib injury, but should be able to return to the lineup shortly. The impetus for the trade was likely the season-ending injury of Rangers LW Alex Frolov. Coming from a Ranger fan, I will say that I am one of the few who appreciated Michal Rozsival. He is a big cap hit ($5 million), especially for what he does, but he will perform well. He has a heavy shot but a tendency to miss the net and looks for passes in the breakout that usually aren't there. I wish the best to Rozsival in Phoenix and hopefully Wolski will perform well for the Blueshirts. Hopefully the change of scenery will be nice for both players. I am curious as to what your opinions are here at Five For Howling.

Unsure yet...

I was surprised by the trade simply because of the cap hit, though I thought it was 4 million not 5… Even at 4 its only a 400k increase in the Yotes cap, but I thought there were some other names that were going to be available soon for a cheaper price, so I’m just wondering if we didn’t pull the plug on Wolski a bit soon. I lived in Colorado for sometime and so I’ve always kept close with the Avs… I always liked Wolski ever since his rookie season and was extremely excited to have him here. He didn’t disappoint last year since the trade, but this year has had trouble finding his role and consistency, which could be due in part to lack of playing time… I’m much less familiar with Rozsival, but it seems like the Yotes have been missing something on the blueline since the loss of Michalek, so hopefully he fits in chemistry wise… I think our young rookie OEL may get a little more playing time down in SA, or maybe GMDM even sees a potential to trade one of our existing D for another piece… At this point I do not know… But the Rangers go themselves a capable 2nd maybe even first liner that will produce points with the mix of right personnel… This first half of the year is an exception, not the rule..

NOTE: These are Carls comments – i just happen to agree

Wolski is all about ‘potential’ and GM’s have gotten a bit smarter in the cap era about not overpaying for ‘potential’ vs. ‘production’. The fact that two organizations wanted him gone is less than a year plus his current numbers makes his trade value fairly low. I think it was a fair deal.

yeah, well what do you know kiwi?

only kidding:) I do agree somewhat, he has been disappointing thus far, but he has had some of the lowest playing totals this year in his career. Its a vicious cycle, "player doesn’t produce like last year, player gets less time on ice. player needs more time on ice to produce like last year, doesn’t “earn” time, gets traded"…

It is a vicious cycle, but I see two positives to this trade:
1) We get someone to (hopefull) tighten out D
2) We sent a message to the players – produce or you go elsewhere.

i have to agree there...

message sent. i just wish that they could’ve landed a bigger name defender with more upside on the offensive end to maybe help with the PP… Though they do need another “stay-at-home” defender, which I believe MR to be, they sure could use another QB to take the reigns with the 2nd PP unit… And I believe there to be a few for the price of 3.8 million per year that might be available soon, though the Yotes did save 800k per annum despite the larger cap hit… I’ve heard MR has a rocket shot, so maybe he would be a good pairing with Yandle to blast shots from the point, though I don’t see him being an improvement over what we have… Thoughts from the Ranger’s side on this one?

Both players have one year remaining on their contracts — Rozsival’s cap hit is $5 million while Wolski’s is $3.8 million.

I’m surprised that GMDM was willing to take on more salary here…

Well

Rozsival’s salary is 3 million, even though his cap hit if 5 million. So the yotes actually save 800K

gotcha, thanks for the info...

Did he have a front-loaded contracted?

Uhh

capgeek would know for sure. Obviously it was a little front-loaded, but nothing crazy.

Cap Hit and Coyotes is meaningless...

Actual payroll is what I would go by since the Coyotes aren’t even close to needing to worry about the Cap (other than the FLOOR) and probably will not be for the foreseeable future.
