None of you know how to skate

This is our game and your arrogant millionaires took it from us. We play hockey. We are hockey. There are more players in the NHL from Manitoba than there are season ticket holders in Phoenix. No one needs to market this game to us. There is not a single player in the NHL that has ever come from Arizona. In typical American style, you used borrowed money to take our team from us and keep our team from coming home. No wonder that you're all drowning in debt. I hope you fatsos (and most of you are fat) all choke on your debt, and while your choking, I hope that the Saudis buy your baseball team, your basketball team and your "football" team, then let them rot in their desert.

Keep the team. I hope they bleed your taxpayers dry so that your bigoted politicians have less money to fund their hateful, racist agendas. You are a loathsome bunch of fatsos.

Five for Howling is a fan community that allows members to post their own thoughts and opinions on the Phoenix Coyotes and hockey in general. These views and thoughts may not be shared by the editor(s) of Five for Howling

I’ve been playing hockey since a little kid so I’m pretty sure I know how to skate. In fact, I have even played in a few tournaments in your own home country. We skated circles around your Calgary boys.

On a different note, go look up Jim Brown, born and raised here in Arizona. He played a few games for the Kings back in the day. So don’t say there haven’t been any NHL players from Arizona. And also the youth hockey here in Arizona has improved quite a bit over the years. I know several kids who have committed to top colleges across the country and I think there is even one who was drafted by the Penguins a few years back, yet to play in the big league though. Don’t be surprised to see some Arizonans in the coming years.

I think you’re missing the point. The Coyotes have been in Arizona for almost a decade-and-a-half at this point, and if there HAS been serious growth in the number of hockey fans in the state, as many of you claim, there should at least be a few up-and-coming young stars from Arizona. Kids who were as young as five when the Coyotes showed up in Phoenix would now be old enough to play professionally, and if the Coyotes had the type of influence on the youth they are said to have had, playing pro hockey would have been a goal for many of those kids.

Not saying it won’t happen, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Meanwhile, I’ll watch Manitoba’s young players (i.e. Jonathan Toews) continue to be among the best in the game, even though we haven’t had an NHL team since ’96.

by fidelastro on May 13, 2010 10:51 AM MST up reply actions

C’mon, get serious. The youth hockey organizations don’t come into existence overnight. And even if they did, they don’t draw talented coaches, advisors, etc. that can mold youth talent and turn them into NHL stars. How many of these Manitoba kids actually stayed in Manitoba throughout their youths and didn’t go play major junior hockey throughout Canada? More likely, we are finding more and more kids that will start playing collegiate hockey and we’ll start to see some of them going into the AHL and perhaps the NHL. David Spina is from Mesa, I believe, and he was one of the last kids cut from the Coyotes during the pre-season.

Just because Venezuela, Japan, and Puerto Rico produce baseball players at a massive rate doesn’t mean they deserve teams in MLB. Just because Mississippi, Alabama, Hawaii, and the Samoan Islands produce football players doesn’t mean they deserve NFL franchises. So what if Manitoba has homegrown stars? Russia, Sweden, and Finland produce just as many.

Furthermore to this, think about all of the NFL stars who come from Alabama. There’s 38 of them. But there’s no team in Alabama. Birmingham-Hoover, Alabama’s largest town, has a population of over a million people. But no one’s arguing that they should get a team, even with the massive factory that’s in the state. Why? Because even though it’s a factory, the region, for the most part, is a bunch of lower class farmers/other jobs similar.

I’ve never been to Manitoba, but I looked quickly at Manitoba. Yeah, Winnipeg is a bustling place, but so’s Birmingham. Most of the province seems to live and breath on agriculture, similar to Alabama. But the city’s not big enough to support a team without provincial support.

Winnipeg has a population of 633,451 people. And about 375,000 of those are employed. Now, let’s say most of those are legitimate hockey fans. I’ll give you 300,000 of those (don’t act like all Canadians live, breath, and die hockey. I know plenty who don’t.

300,000 regional hockey fans is a decent sized amount for an NHL team. You’d have ticket holders, yes, but would companies really put major money into sponsorships for (assuming they think the entire province will see them) just over 1 million people?

Phoenix (and it’s surrounding areas) has a population of roughly 4.3 million, and it’s massively expanding. The team plays in Glendale, a suburb, with a population of over 200,000. Fewer are hockey fans, but you put up a billboard for the team with it’s sponsors on it, and more people are going to see it.

An expanding market that’s 12th in the US in population and is a huge TV market is seen as a wide open vat of potential earnings to a league. That, and it’s metropolitan population is greater than the entire provincial population times FOUR.

Anyway, none of this really matters, because most “Make it Seveners” will argue it’s too hot to have hockey fans. The real issue here is that you guys deserve a team, and every time a team seems to have a possibility of moving, you guys all jump in on them and act like they don’t deserve a team because you do. Come on. One, Hockey is for everyone. Two, yeah, the ‘Yotes have been in the desert for a decade, but don’t even act like they’ve had successful clubs until this year. Give them 2-3 years with successful management, and see what happens. Just because the best athletes in the sport come from other places doesn’t mean you can’t have fans elsewhere.

I understand completely that Phoenix is one of your fallen children, who ran away, and you want it back. But it’s now they’re they Coyotes. They haven’t been the Jets for over ten years. It’s probably time to look at a better way to get a team (personally, I’m in favor of expansion. Get Winnipeg and either Quebec City or Kansas City squads, and move to four divisions of eight teams each).

Excellent analysis

My personal problem with a lot of the trolling Jets Fans is summed up pefectly

none of this really matters, because most "Make it Seveners" will argue it’s too hot to have hockey fans. The real issue here is that you guys deserve a team, and every time a team seems to have a possibility of moving, you guys all jump in on them and act like they don’t deserve a team because you do.

I have no problem with the NHL going to 32 teams – this gives us two conferences of 16 which actually evens a few things out. Give a team to Winnipeg – they can be the jets, the cats, the moose fuckers (sorry I just love that sayig) for all we care. Take our History before 1996. Let the history books say ‘In 1996 the winnipeg jets moved to Phoenix a hockey team started in Phoenix’.

But just because you think you deserve a team doesn’t mean other fans don’t. Thats what it comes down to. And that is why we are defensive.

“Just because Venezuela, Japan, and Puerto Rico produce baseball players at a massive rate doesn’t mean they deserve teams in MLB. Just because Mississippi, Alabama, Hawaii, and the Samoan Islands produce football players doesn’t mean they deserve NFL franchises. So what if Manitoba has homegrown stars? Russia, Sweden, and Finland produce just as many.”

True, but Venezuela, Japan and Puerto Rico don’t already have teams in the MLB. The NHL already has a number of Canadian teams, including the team with the most championships in history (Canadiens). It’s a league with roots in Canada, in a Canadian sport, playing for a trophy that originated in Canada, with over half of the players born in Canada. So it’s not as much of a stretch as giving Japan a team in a league that is entirely American but one team. Japan is not even on the same continent. That doesn’t make sense.

With the NHL, Canada still produces the largest fanbase for the sport and generates the most players. The southern expansion was a bad idea overall. Of course hockey is for everyone, and I’m glad to see there’s some interest in such unlikely places as the desert, but Bettman’s obsessive quest for TV dollars has resulted in a lot of dissatisfaction from the fanbase that has been loyal to the league for decades. I’m not just talking Canada, but the northern states as well.

THAT’s what it’ll take? A billboard?!? Shit, the Coyotes could have saved themselves a lot of money if they’d thought of that years ago. It doesn’t matter how many people live in the city or the region or the state. Yes, it’s a much larger population than Winnipeg and most Canadian centres. Almost every city in the US has a larger population than we do, but population ISN’T what counts here. I understand that’s the league’s thinking…huge population, obvious market for a TV deal…but if only a small percentage of that population is going to watch hockey, whether in person or on TV, it’s not going to make a difference.

One, Hockey is for everyone. Two, yeah, the ‘Yotes have been in the desert for a decade, but don’t even act like they’ve had successful clubs until this year. Give them 2-3 years with successful management, and see what happens.

This is the problem right here. The team has NEVER had a successful season. If the Coyotes had been contenders (or even had good attendance numbers) for years and were only experiencing a drop recently, I don’t think any of these ownership issues would have arisen in the first place. What makes you think THIS year is going to be the year when everything turns around? Or next year? You’ve already had what…13 years to try to sort this shit out? Hasn’t worked yet. Obviously, as someone who went through the Jets thing, I’m well aware that you want to hold on as long as humanly possible, hoping that something works out (we did the same in Winnipeg).

I’m not in Phoenix, so I’m going by news reports from all over the place, but it definitely seems like you guys are in a situation that’s as bad as we were in back in 1995, when we played a “lame-duck” last season, with the full knowledge that we were going to be sold as soon as the season ended.

It’s probably time to look at a better way to get a team (personally, I’m in favor of expansion. Get Winnipeg and either Quebec City or Kansas City squads, and move to four divisions of eight teams each).

While I agree that Winnipeg and QC need teams ASAP (and I don’t know enough about the situation in Kansas), I don’t think expansion is the way to go. There are too many teams hemmorhaging money (not just the ’Yotes) and getting hideous attendance from the last couple of expansions that adding more is not going to solve any of the problems.

I think the NHL needs to cut their losses and instead of this “we’re going to do whatever we can to keep the franchises where they are” attitude — which is a huge lie, because they didn’t fight nearly as hard for Winnipeg, Quebec, Hartford or Minnesota —Bettman needs to admit that maybe his southern expansion was NOT such a hot idea (pun intended) and just let the dying teams just die. Do not resuscitate. Then start over in cities that will succeed, based on love of hockey and large fanbases, rather than a dream of TV dollars that has never really materialized.

Whether Phoenix is one of these dying teams that needs a DNR order…I’m not sure. They’re certainly portrayed that way by the international (not just Canadian) media, and I hope, for the sake of the fans out there, that they can be held on to…but for the sake of the league and hockey in general, I would hope that a team with no realistic chance of being saved or improving its attendance/revenue would get cut off before it bleeds any further.

WM, as a person who moved from B’ham I can also add there’s nothing bigger than college football in the state.

Also, the jobs there are better than you realize (ja, ironic I moved to Phx for a job.. Ja, ja) so playing the economics side of the argument is a touch weak, but you’re just laying out a side of the argument, and I understand and respect that.

Truth is every area has a plateau of sports fandom. In the PHX it seems to be just the hardcore fans. Give this city another 10 years of the ‘Yotes (see the Cardinals) and you’ll see a passionate hockey city. Until the plateau has not been reached for the city.

It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

The team is losing hundreds of millions of dollars. I don’t know if it can wait 10 years.

As I’ve suggested elsewhere, I don’t think Phoenix should have jumped right in with a top-level pro team and assumed a fanbase would materialize out of nowhere. Phoenix is obviously a non-traditional hockey market (nothing inherently wrong with that), so it would have made far more sense to start with a minor pro team — maybe AHL (like the Manitoba Moose) — put THEM into a new arena and grow the sport from there.

If the vast majority of Phoenix/Glendale residents are not very familiar with hockey in the first place, they’re not going to know the difference, and hockey could still grow among the youth, if it was promoted properly. THEN, if Phoenix, regardless of population or economic status in the US or potential TV deals, could prove it was a viable HOCKEY market, with a real fanbase, THEN give them an NHL team.

Of course, it didn’t happen this way, so now the Coyotes are bleeding money out of every orifice, frantically trying to find an owner, and the city of Glendale is on the hook for $25 million. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

We did have a minor team before the pro

The Roadrunners were here way before the coyotes, they were good, but as soon as the coyotes came the team left.

ever catch the Roadrunners of the IHL? They played at the MadHouse on McDowell.

Aside from Samuelsson — who, if he did grow up in the area, is a first-generation American with a family deeply rooted in European hockey, not just some local kid who got excited by the Coyotes and started playing — all of these kids are playing junior or college hockey.

It’s not really that impressive. There are almost as many kids who went to my either my junior high or high school in Winnipeg who eventually played at the junior level and never made it any further. Hell, the guy whose desk is behind mine at the office -and I don’t work in even remotely a sports-related business - formerly played minor pro in Europe. My friend’s dad played professionally in Italy in the early 70s. Etc. etc.

by fidelastro on May 14, 2010 1:14 PM MST up reply actions

All those kids are currently playing junior or college hockey elsewhere.. But they played the majority of their youth hockey here in Arizona. The ones that were born in Arizona would’ve been about five or six when the Coyotes came to town, which is when they started playing hockey.

born and raised... played with him.

when i moved here, there was ONE competitive youth hockey association to play for, and we played all of our games outside of Arizona… My what has changed since the late 90s early 2000s… fidelastro, you have no idea what hockey was and is now in Phx, and if you go by production of top NHL players as a city’s deserving of an NHL Franchise, then Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Boston are not that great of hockey towns… There are a several good players, but no American city is a hotbed for producing NHL quality players. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a love for the sport. Get over it, and don’t argue with things you have zero knowledge on, ie Arizona Youth Hockey.
