Coyote Tracks - WHITEOUT April 19 Edition
Ok, apologies for the extremely scarce post (I promise to make up for this tonight). Yesterday was an awesome win for the Coyotes, taking it to Detroit in their own building and regaining home ice advantage in the series. It was bittersweet in that Captain Shane Doan sustained the dreaded "upper body injury" and did not return after his first shift in the 2nd period. But the team rallied around and scored some very pretty goals (that Petr Prucha goal was so Detroit-style, it was doubly sweet) and won the game handily. Ilya Bryzgalov looked his solid self in net especially towards the end of the third while weathering the storm.
LAST NIGHT'S NHL SCORES: PHX 4 - DET 2 (Phoenix leads series 2-1); NJ 2 - PHL 3 (OT) (Philadelphia leads series 2-1); PIT 4 - OTT 2 (Pittsburgh leads series 2-1); NSH 0 - CHI 2 (Series tied 1-1 - this marks the first time in NHL history that all 8 series have started 1-1); SJ 0 - COL 1 (Colorado leads series 2-1).
Some interesting notes about the other games...Dan Carcillo had the OT game winning goal for the Flyers and an assist on an earlier goal by Mike Richards...a very solid outing; San Jose outshot Colorado 51-17 in the game and the game winner was scored on a misdirected reverse by San Jose defenseman Dan Boyle...a rough loss for a team that already has some mental issues regarding the playoffs.

I have a feeling that Miller will win, but Bryzgalov has to be in 2nd.

yeah, surprised Luongo didn’t take Brodeur’s spot there…

I am kind of surprised that Howard wasn’t the 3rd nominee instead of Brodeur. I thought playing in Detroit would get him in.
Sadly, I think Miller will win, and Bryz will come in second. I think Bryz and Miller should be serious candidates for the Hart trophy, as well.
Anyway, Congrats Bryzgalov!
honestly, that goal by Prucha took my breath away. I LOVE seeing the Wings beat at their own game.

Everything about that play was beautiful…the rush up the ice, Prucha’s initial back pass to Vrbata setting up a give-and-go as he busted past Stuart and Lidstrom…just gorgeous. Prucha looked like one of the best Coyotes on the ice for large chunks of the season and just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. Scoring that goal was especially sweet for him, I imagine. The good news for the Coyotes is that he has tended to score in bunches this season, so maybe we will see more of this tomorrow in Game 4.

Possibly the best goal of the playoffs so far… right up there, anyway.
leaf fan stuck in ottawa, a localized black hole that will suck everything in that area to oblivion.
Yeah, the creepy Sedin twins had one in their first game that was pretty slick. A bunch of the goals during the furious second period of Game 2 were also pretty sweet – Lombardi’s in particular off the Doan saucer pass and Doan’s goal off the great feed from Fiddler.
But I agree that this was a highlight-reel worthy effort.

I saw it
coming straight off the face off. I never thought in my life i would see a rafalski lidstrom screw up like that. Im telling you.. im seeing far superior efforts and determination out the yotes then the wings. I like howard, he is a good young goaltender.. but damn that 4th goal shouldnt have even been a question.. terrible defense and goaltending there. it tells you alot about a team when their star and captain go down and they step it up a notch.. talk about a gut check..
Was it Rafalski out there for the Prucha goal? I thought he was out of the lineup, but I was too busy screaming to really take note.
I love Lidstrom for all he’s done over the years, but is it me, or does he just look a bit old and slow out there right now?

No
i dont think it because hes older.. he has been outstanding all year. I think hes human and is going to have those games. Lids and Ralf just werent communicating like they usually do, and everytime ericsson is on the ice.. i get really nervous. There is a guy you could really take advantage of if you ask me.
Question...
this is an honest to god question and I’m hoping it isn’t seen as questioning the officiating…from Scott Burnside’s weekend recap (I think it was Burnside…whoever it was, lead story on ESPN’s NHL page)…
“5. If it’s the playoffs, it must be time to quibble about the officiating. After it appeared that the too-many-men-on-the-ice call against Vancouver in overtime in Game 2 might not have been exactly as the rule book suggests, it was a bit disheartening to watch Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom play the puck while he was still on the bench during a player change in Sunday’s game. That, given our understanding of the rule book, isn’t kosher, but no call was made. Wouldn’t it be nice if all the calls were perfect — we refer to the perfect non-call on Carcillo above — but they aren’t. Live with it.”
I saw that Lidstrom play in the first period and started yelling at the screen for a second before my wife yelled at me to stop…and then Doc and/or Eddie O made a comment about how coming onto the ice stick first was the way to go. But I thought it was an illegal line change. I seem to remember in a Coyotes game 2 years ago Keith Ballard was called for a penalty when he touched the puck coming out of the penalty box before stepping on the ice. I don’t know if there is a difference between a change from the bench and coming out of the penalty box, but I wouldn’t think so and Burnside’s comments appear to agree with that take. Am I right and Detroit got away with this too many men? If so, it is just another example of the Red Wings appearing to have trouble getting their changes done smoothly as they were a mess in games 1 and 2 (despite no calls, a lot of iffy changes).

Moridin, it IS a penalty. Interference, to be exact. You must have at least one foot on the ice, or you’re not considered to be “in play”
Under “Interference”
A minor penalty shall be imposed on any identifiable player on the players’ bench or penalty bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play. In addition, should a player about to come onto the ice, play the puck while one or both skates are still on the players’ or penalty bench, a minor penalty for interference shall be assessed.
They’ll cut you some slack if you have one foot on the ice though. Keep in mind this only counts if you intentionally play the puck. I think lidstrom got some leeway because he stood around confused for about 2 seconds before playing it. Still a penalty, though, and should have been called.
Interestingly, its not illegal to bodycheck someone coming out of the penalty box, as long as you don’t play the puck.

Note: It is technically illegal to bodycheck people while in the penalty box, but people get away with that often.

What about falling into the penalty box on a body check? I know it’s not a penalty, and I only bring it up because it is my favorite part of the Sutton hit on Leopold the other night in Pittsburgh…I have no idea why the penalty box door opened, but Sutton falling into it and hitting the deck cracked me up for some reason…

Actually, it means he probably broke the lock to the penalty box door, which would be fine-worthy (to the penguins) if they weren’t going to replace their arena anyway.
Seriously, that arena is FALLING APART. Shoot a hard around, always goes on net… The Zamboni doors also got opened during play by a check TWICE…
In fact, i have seen enough arena fails in one game that I’m fairly sure the Senators could justifiably file a grievance against the Penguins for bad arena accomodations.

Thanks! That was my thought as well, but as was pointed out to me last week, I should read the rulebook…

Yeah, when I’ve had to do so, I’ve found it to be very useful. I was more making a snarky remark about PaulinMiamiBeach yelling at me to stop posting until I read the rulebook…

Ha. When I saw that play, I was wondering if that was legal. But then neither Doc nor Eddie O said anything about it. So, I figured it must be allowed. Silly me. I need to go read the rulebook next time I have a question.
Oh well. I’m with ESPN. Officiating is never going to be perfect. And this is no way the most egregious non-call of the playoffs so far.
You guys are doing yourselves, the team, and the rest of the Coyote Nation a disservice by continuing to play the Cinderella card.
The fact of the matter is that Phoenix has outplayed Detroit in two out of three games, and the series is, coincidentally, 2-1 Phoenix.
I want Detroit to win as bad as the next guy, but I’m tired of hearing how Phoenix has come out of nowhere to lead the series.
They are the better team right now.
Welcome...
Thanks for joining up.
I can’t speak for anyone, but I haven’t (consciously) played up the Cinderella card. Granted, it’s been a fairy tale season by all accounts, but this team deserves all the accolades for playing very solid hockey. I hope that we are not overlooking that fact at all, but I’ll be the first to admit that our whole experience this year just lends us to have it invade our subconsciousness and overshadow other things. Speaking for myself, I’ve been more than a little tired of people calling the Coyotes an underdog after posting 107 points and finishing with the 4th best record in all of hockey…and watching Doc and Eddie O be a bit patronizing about the Coyotes throughout the broadcast was more than a tad annoying. But whatever…it’s been a great series with everything you could ask for.
Hope that if the series doesn’t go as you want, you’ll join us in cheering for the Coyotes the rest of the way…

I don’t think there are many Coyotes fans saying they’re a Cinderella team. I’ve only ever read that from analysts on the various networks. It’s probably because the vast majority of them predicted Wings in 5, so they have to justify being wrong. An ESPN article I read after the match-ups were set basically said the Coyotes would be a good warmup series for the Wings.
Those of us that have been following the team for longer that just this season will tell you that their success is simply due to hard work and playing as a team.
I said Yotes in six, actually. I guess im crazy, huh?

Yeah...
for giving the Wings so much credit. ‘Yotes in 5. I’m just kidding…
I actually think it will probably be a seven game series with the teams trading wins the whole way…that will be very exciting, but I’m not sure my heart can take that…

I thought Yotes in 6 as well. Mostly the talking heads on TV, NHL.com, and ESPN were saying Wings in 5, some 6. The only way they gave the Coyotes a chance was if they were able to make it to 7.
Being underestimated by random Wings fans online is one thing, but the “professional analysts” should at least give the Coyotes a fair shake. Hopefully a Coyotes win on Tuesday will make them change their tune.
I really
dont know which wings fan said this was a def win for the wings… i have never heard that. I am a die hard wings fan and on winging it on motown.. no one i mean no one has taken the yotes lightly… playoffs are a different game.. anybody’s game. you might hear one or two bandwagoners or some “expert” vomit ridiculous lines but as a majority I dont think hockeytown has ever believed this was going to be easy. If you want me to be straight up honest, the yotes were the last team I wanted to face.. ill swear till the end on that.
I admire your ability to not read the comments on Puck Daddy or various other sites…
No, I’ve heard similarly from a variety of Wings fans…I think MLive had an article about it even. But the national analysts were definitely not giving the Coyotes much of a chance. I attribute that mostly to them not having a clue about the Coyotes.

Ill be
honest.. i do stay away from any comment boards unless it on sbnation. here your name is acounted for something and 90% of the time I think this is the only place to have an intelligent hockey conversation. O and those analyst are getting paid to entertain.. so i dont listen to a whole lot of them.
Very true...
SBNation really does a great job of letting us control things as well and get rid of the trolls and the folks that are just here to stir it up. It’s been great having some Red Wings fans like yourself and ahtrap here on the site giving your insights. If I could convince my Wings friend to join, I’d welcome him to the conversation as well, but he seems content to give me his thoughts on the golf course…

Good idea staying away from most boards. At certain levels of anonymity, the trolls come out in full force. Also, there’s a certain kind of person that has nothing of value to say yet screams the loudest.
The analysts are meant to entertain, but I also expect some degree of objective insight. (then again, maybe I’m critical of them because they didn’t favor my team)
I hate calling the team the Cinderella team in the playoffs. (If Colorado or Montreal advance, I might give that label to them.) Maybe in the regular season it was okay. I am a little irritated that the all the press said Detroit was the favorite and predicted the series Detroit in 5. I thought that was insulting. Coyotes finished with the 3rd most points in the conference. They won more games than Detroit. Yeah, Detroit has gotten better lately. But, guess what? Since the trade deadline, the Coyotes have gotten better, too.
I predicted a 7 game series, since I thought the teams would likely slug it out for a long time. But, I am still hoping for Coyotes in 6.
Judging by those who post on this blog from around the league
“The next guy” wants Detroit to lose… and then possibly be dissolved as a hockey team, never to be spoken of again.

I am so happy to have discovered sites that live stream all these hockey games. I watched that Avs-Sharks game last night and that was crazy. Loved the quote from McLellan: “We couldn’t beat their goalie, so we found a way to beat ours.” Good that he can joke about that, because it was kind of horrifying. Especially for the Sharks, of all teams.
Watching Washington-Montreal right now. Yea!
