Derek Morris Returning to Coyotes for 2011 4th Round Pick
TSN is reporting that Defenseman Derek Morris will be returning to the Coyotes and the Coyotes have traded them a 4th round pick in next year's draft.
Morris was a fan favorite here in the valley and should be another solid defender that will easily slot into the defensive lineup without disrupting the current system.
I can't believe that all it took to get Morris was a 4th round pick in next year's draft. That's an outstanding move to get a guy that we never wanted to trade away in the first place. Basically that move to trade him means we get him and Petr Prucha for a 4th. Who wouldn't take that?

Some insight from ESPN's Pierre LeBrun during the live chat:
Pierre LeBrun: Some background on the Derek Morris trade to Boston from a source close to the situation:
Morris gets a call Friday and is told Boston and Phoenix have a deal in place and would he be willing no waive his no-trade clause. He loves Phoenix and still owns a home in Scottsdale and he’s UFA July1 so he says yes to Boston.
Morris this weekend says goodbye to Bruins teammates. On Monday, Bruins phone Morris and say the the trade is off. He’s confused. This morning, trade is back on and Morris agrees again.
Meanwhile, Coyotes are apparently interested in extending Morris when the time is right, likely after the Ice Edge thing is figured out.
Morris is a good guy and he’s happy to be going back to Phoenix. He played five years there when things were bad and now he goes back to a playoff team.

Speak for yourself on the “never wanted to trade away” thing. I rejoiced.

I am speaking for myself thanks.
We means the team. They didn’t want to get rid of him. They had to when they couldn’t extend his contract.

Wolski's already got 17 goals this year.
A fantastic pickup, on our end. His work ethic was questioned initially, but Barnaby swears he’ll be a stud under Tippett. I concur. Mueller was no replacement for Upshall, but Wolski should ease in nicely.

Checked in over at Mile High Hockey for their reactions and they are mixed…lots of people questioning whether his points totals match his actual playing ability…

I wonder???
What will happen with the alternate captain letter? I mean Morris had it for quite a while, but Michalek earned it. I know he’s just coming back for now and Michalek will keep the letter for the rest of the season, but next year will we try and keep Morris and if so will he give the organization crap until he gets his letter back? Just a thought.
There are two coyotes inside every fan, a good one and a bad one, so which coyote do you feed?
Most likely
Z would keep it. DMo may be a leader, but the guys know Z, especially the Czechs in the room. If Morris reups with the team in the summer then that could change, but for now Z earned it and should keep it.

I know Z will keep it for the rest of this season but...
What will happen for next season is what I’m asking? will Mo try to get his letter back next year if his contract is extended for next year? I imagine he will try and get it back as part of a contract agreement, depending upon how well he does with the team after being back from the eastern conference.

Hmmm... It's an interesting question...
I’m not really sure. I think it all depends on how he performs. It also depends on the make up of the team next year. If we have as many Czech players as we currently do and Z keeps working as hard as he is I think it’s a good fit for him.

Meh...
I don’t think it’d really be a big issue for DMo…I’m fairly certain that he didn’t have an A with either NY or Boston. He definitely had deserved it while he was here for the last stint (probably more than Jovo at that time), but I think even he would agree that Z should have the A right now. I think for a guy like Z who is probably less vocal about his leadership, the A is important, whereas DMo can bring the leadership regardless of whether or not he has the letter on the jersey (like Pronger has done in Philly this year despite not (always) having a letter on his jersey)…

But...
To just be gone a year and when you come back not have that letter, it’s kinda hard. It’s like leaving a company you were a VP of and coming back as a manager. It’s a hard pill to swallow. I’m wondering how DMo is gonna swallow that pill.

Yeah, I just don’t know that the analogy fits. It’s not like Doan or the guys who are wearing the A’s (Fiddler and Z yesterday) has authority to demand anything of his “inferiors”. The A is definitely a sign of respect, and it gives you a certain right to talk with the officials on the ice…particularly if the captain is not on the ice. It doesn’t give you a bonus in terms of money, and it doesn’t change the way players are perceived in the locker room. I have no doubt that guys like Yandle and even Z are going to listen to things that Morris says and give him his due respect…and I’m sure Morris is going to recognize that Z and Fiddler and whoever else wears an A on the team has earned it from playing with the Coyotes this season while he’s been gone. If there’s one thing I’ve gathered from getting to talk to DMo it’s that he is not one to rock the boat. Even last year when he clearly wanted to stay in Phoenix but the money situation didn’t let it happen, he was very upfront with GMDM about it and didn’t make a big stink about the trade…
