Russia vs. Slovakia Gamethread: Bryzgalov is the Man
Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will see his first action of these Olympics tonight against Slovakia. Russia ran over Latvia on Tuesday 8-2 with Evgeni Nabokov in net. Everyone on the Russian team practically got in on the goal scoring. Alexander Radulov (1), Danis Zaripov (2), Alexander Ovechkin (2), Ilya Kovalchuk (1), Evgeni Malkin (1) and Alexei Morozov (1). I'd expect much of the same tonight with the talanted offense that Russia brings to the table.
Slovakia went down 3-1 to the Czech team. It didn't help much that two of the team's top players in Zdeno Chara and Marian Gaborik were taking penalties all over the place. Tomas Vokun played well for the Czech side as well. I'm not sure which Slovakian goalie is in tonight, but since Halak got the start last time, i'll guess that Peter Budaj gets in tonight.
Comment away here about the game that starts at 10PM Mountain time (supposedly) or check out one of the other threads at Japer's Rink, Fear the Fin and the other sites in the SBNation network

How times have changed...
So, is it weird that as a USA citizen and fan, that I can openly root for team Russia (as long as they aren’t playing us), and yet REALLY wanted the Swiss team to steal that one tonight against the Canadians?

I did too.
Swiss played their butts off and deserved to win, but I think they exceeded expectations in that one and Hiller was out of his mind.

To be honest, a small part of me wanted to see just far the Canadian media could press the panic button, had they lost. That is not a good reason to root for or against a team, and ultimately wasn’t the true reason I wanted to see the Swiss pull it off, but it would have be amusing to gaze at the aftermath, as an outside observer.
Frankly, I’m not a “Canadian hater”, but I am rooting for whatever can help the American team advance, and a Swiss win tonight wouldn’t have hurt our chances one bit.

I was torn
I really wanted to see the swiss pull it off, but I really didn’t want Marty to take the loss. I have no problem cheering on Canada as long as Luongo doesn’t play.
I second the Russian thing as well. I’ve joked that I never thought I’d see the day when a DC team had a Russian star and the marketing slogan “Rock the Red”

Side note: how crappy of a draw is it that Slovakia ended up playing the Czechs and the Russians within about 24 hrs of each other?

I’m having a hard time checking my nhl allegiances at the door. I found myself disliking sweden a lot. But I really like foppa and have nothing against them. Then i realized it was all because of Ohlund and the Sedins

Yeah that'll do it.
Sedins are weird.

I hear ya…a lot of the “new” hockey fans here in DC are like, “I can’t stand a lot of the guys on team USA…go Russia!”. They just don’t get it, in my opinion. The Olympics are about more than NHL rivalries…but I am glad I don’t have to root for Crosby.

Brooks Orpik is probably my #1 “in denial” player…but hey, for two weeks I think we can bond over a common goal, right?

And of course NBC missed the first few minutes…

If it’s curling or women’s hockey, you know men’s hockey is getting hosed for at least 5 minutes of gametime

Indeed.
But no way the Russians let that last too much longer.

That’s all I’ve got. NBC has been brutal in cracking down on streams.
