I'll have something up about this mess a little later tonight. Right now i'm so angry everything just comes out as long straings of unprintable words. For now I say screw off haters that want this team to move, and keep the faith Coyotes fans. At least for 8 more weeks. Here's some Links...

Hey man, Canada’s got nothing to do with this. Most of us have been there, and I think if we get over our stupid hockey jingoism, we’ll see that the fans in Phoenix aren’t that much different than those in Winnipeg and Quebec City. As I state below, Oilers fans, of all people, should get it.

There's a lot of blame to go around...

…all of which I’m sure you’re intimately familiar with, so I’ll not get into it. More than anything, I want to offer my sympathy and support. I’ve been through relocation drama, both immediate (1998, when the Oilers were mere days from moving to Houston before the EIG stepped in) and implied (2004-06, when Cal Nichols repeatedly made subtle threats about the future of the team if they didn’t get a low salary cap), and it feels like utter betrayal. I’d love a seventh team up north, but not at the expense of a fanbase that’s been screwed by poor management decisions for most of the franchise’s history in the desert.

And that’s exactly what’s going on. After being told by everyone here they were staying and standing up for the team against others saying they should move I get stabbed in the back. I fell PERSONALLY insulted by the team after repeatedly being told by execs they were working to stay here…

If anything, it’s actually worse for you guys, because for as devastating as the idea of losing the Oilers was, at least we could see Pocklington’s betrayal coming, because it fit his MO for the previous decade. I mean, who are you going to believe in a game of he said, she said: the team that, until today, had given you no reason to doubt their integrity, or the Torontonian columnist who could easily be perceived as pushing an agenda? Even Cal Nichols’ veiled threats were pretty much just that, and little more (though I still find it both galling and hypocritical that he demanded lifelong Edmontonian Daryl Katz sign a location agreement before selling the team).

They’ve all been biased as hell. I might have given him and his cronies the benefit of the doubt if they had reported all their findings and speculation without the over the top and merciless ripping and tearing at hockey in the desert, derision of the fans here and the obvious delight and glee they took in the fact that the Coyotes were in trouble.

They aren’t to blame for the issues but they sure as hell aren’t real journalists either.

i will say, however, this might be karmic payback for those ugly ass jeresys they wore when they broke first moved to phoenix. the hockey gods couldnt have liked that.

by averagejoe on May 5, 2009 8:07 PM MST up reply actions

Sources tell ESPN.com’s Scott Burnside the NHL will oppose the Balsillie’s move to purchase the team, as will the City of Glendale. It is believed the city will argue filing for bankruptcy does not give the team the right to break their lease, and that commissioner Gary Bettman was dealing with the situation in Phoenix when he was informed of the bankruptcy proceedings and the bid to sell the team to Balsillie.

So not only did Moyes do it behind Bettman’s back, he did it while Bettman was in town?!?!

This is going to sound weird to hardcore hockey fans

but the only reason I am now an NHL fan is because of the Phoenix Coyotes. I grew up in Arizona. I never played hockey a day in my life. I was 11 years old when the Coyotes came to Phoenix. The only NHL games I have ever been to have been Coyotes games.

I’ve since moved away from the valley, but I still hold a special place for the team. I’m in shock right now. I really hope the NHL does the right thing and saves the Coyotes.

Not as familiar with the situation

I’m an Islanders fan, and have been wrapped up in our uncertain situation so much that I haven’t been able to follow what has been going on with the Coyotes. When did the NHL remove Moyes from control of the franchise? Isn’t he the owner? Isn’t he the one who ponied up the funds to buy the team in the first place? Was the situation with him being removed because the NHL has had to cover operating costs? And if he has been removed from decision making, can he file for bankruptcy for a club that he has no control over? WTF is going on? I don’t understand how all of this is kosher.

by DanNOLA on May 5, 2009 8:23 PM MST reply actions

I have no idea either. NHL removed Moyes today as far as I know. They are not even sure about the validity of the offer/filing. There are just a 1,000,000 more questions than there were yesterday.

there are different accounts as to when Moyes was removed from control. There were stories here in Toronto that the NHL had been operating the club for months (at least since the trade deadline) which was denied by the NHL.

From Deputy Commish Bill Daly:

“We have just become aware of today’s Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club’s constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League’s 29 other Member Clubs.”

Let it all out

Hey Odin, even if it takes 15 re-writes to get something comprehensible, let it all out. You’ll find it very beneficial. Plus, I think it’s safe to say we want to hear that message.

Hang in there. Real hockey fans are everywhere, and they back each other up in tough times. This drama isn’t even close to being over… and I’ve seen enough of these recently to know that relocation is an incredibly unlikely conclusion in today’s NHL.

I have a simple question and am not looking to be skewered

I admit I am not a hockey diehard, but I am religious about sports business. Every article I have read just vaguely says “Southern Ontario.” Does that just mean Toronto-area or is there somewhere else in the region that can support a NHL franchise?

Again, I mean that out of curiosity and naivety to Canada.

There was also talk recently of a group looking at land in the Vaughn area to build an arena. That’s immediately west of Toronto and part of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). This would essentially mean a second Toronto franchise if that area were the eventual location of a NHL franchise.

not gonna do it

How much power do you think the Maple Leafs have?

And how much $$$ (canadian) do you think they’ll demand if a team was to move to their territory?

Unless that Blackberry Prick is going to spend 100+ million to satisfy the Leafs, it just ain’t gonna happen.

Now if a buyer steps forward and intends to locate to some other USA city, then be worried.

the root of all evil

It’s always about the money. If he paid a billion dollars to satisfy the NHL and the Leafs, the deal is done and the 2/3 start licking their chops.

The whole question is will he (and can he) pay as much as the minimum the NHL and Leafs would accept.

I know the problems in Phoenix were crappy owners who negotiated one of the worst leases/local revenue sharing in the league (along with the Isles. Imagine that, those are the two most likely to move).

I know the fans in Phoenix and it’s a very viable market for hockey, and the fan support is there, despite the Canadian media’s portrayal. I hope there can be a deal to keep the ’Yotes in Phoenix.

Odin, Keep Fighting ...

Hiya -

Saw the news earlier today, but if you go through the archives at one fan’s perspective, you’ll see that everyone from the north wanted to see this occur.

I have nothing nice to say about them, nor even care. Like I wrote over at Mirtle’s page, there were financial problems with other teams but no one clamored to remove them from the Southwest, where many pro players are starting to claw their way up to the NHL and many more will.

You have the time and the talent to keep writing, and I hope you do. I also hope that this franchise stays here. However, the summer just got interesting.

The haters from the North, well…they just love this…and you and I (and Hip Shot Blog) loathe the news.

Hi, no matter what people think, this is really tough for you, the hockey fans in Arizona. I live in France, which is not exactly a hockey hotbed either, and I know it’s not always easy to be a fan of a sport most people around you don’t care about. And I also know very well that you don’t have to be born and raised in Canada to be passionate and very knowledgeable about the hockey. Losing one’s team sucks. I hope this doesn’t happen to you.
