4th round pick???

Ummm… may I say that this sucks? Hopefully a better trade occurs later on…

My body might be in Greece, but my mind and my heart is in Arizona. When the heck will I visit the Desert?

there ya go

not a bad return for softOlio… and that 1st rounder could be parlayed into something good either in the next couple of hours or at the draft

Seems good

Both guys are young, and Olli didn’t really turn out what the Coyotes expected. And of course a 1st round pick is pretty good too. Hopefully we’ll trade Morris for a good defensive man!

"12:40 EST Olli Jokinen to Calgary for Lombardi, Prust and a 1st!"

Saw that on NHL.com. Is it any good trade? I think Lombardi is a good player, I’ve heard his name quite a few times (and no… besides the Lombardi Trophy in NFL!).

by Giannaros on Mar 4, 2009 10:50 AM MST reply actions

Lombardi is a decent center

has 30 points on the season. Prust has a concussion from his last game… but that first round pick will definitely come in handy

Clarification

Points in the NHL is the total of goals and assists?

by Giannaros on Mar 4, 2009 11:05 AM MST up reply actions

yep

player’s personal points are goals and assists, 30 isn’t bad, especially on our team

Right now the Coyotes

only have 4 players with over 30 points… ughhh

by Monique Reaux on Mar 4, 2009 11:11 AM MST up reply actions

He also has a +/- of +11

While Jokinen has -4. Don’t really know how that works though, but I guess it is somewhat important.

My body might be in Greece, but my mind and my heart is in Arizona. When the heck will I visit the Desert?

by Giannaros on Mar 4, 2009 11:19 AM MST up reply actions

+/-

Is a reflection of what happens when a player is on the ice. It’s only used for even strength situations though. For example. Player x is on the ice for a goal against, he gets -1. If a player is on the ice when a goal is scored for his team he gets a +1, over time if you’re an effective player your + should be high, if innefective a big -

I didn’t call Olli SoftOlio for nuthin… Lombardi actually knows how to get back into defensive position to help his blueliners AND more importantly WILL do it

HI!!!

I think we need Tater. I really don’t think Al has played well enough this season to deserve a call-up. They might, because of Maloney and the mancrush. But I hope that they reward results and call up Tater.

by C13TheDiva on Mar 4, 2009 12:01 PM MST up reply actions

we need Tater?

For what? to sit behind Bryz twiddling his thumbs? Retarding his development? Blowing SA’s chances to squeak into their playoffs? No… we need that dork Montoya who isnt developin anyway to come up and get a couple of games in relief of Bryz (only like 19 games left anyway… might as well let the lil punk take 2 of them) can’t hurt him and can’t hurt the rest of the season for the Yootes either

I didn't say that he should.

It sucks that they couldn’t get a deal worked out that would be beneficial for both him and the team. But I understand where the team is coming from on this one. The financial situation puts them in a bind. Gotta do what ya gotta do… But I think they should’ve kept it a little more private and I don’t agree with him sitting out the last few games.

by C13TheDiva on Mar 4, 2009 12:25 PM MST up reply actions

Well

It was only 1 game vs St. Louis. And there we plenty of teams that scratched players for the last game or two just in case. Toronto is kicking themselves for not scratching Kaberle and him breaking his hand again.

What happened is hat they couldn’t work out a deal so they decided to trade him so he couldn’t just walk for nothing at the end of the year. Yotes were only offering a one year deal because of the finances and he wanted more years for more dollars

Sorry, but...

…good riddance to Carcillo. He’s always been a bit of a head case and now that we have Prust we don’t need a fighter who can cost us a game in stupid brainless penalties. Plus, we got a 2nd out of the deal to offset the 3rd we sent to Calgary for Olli, so it’s a win deal for us.

Travis...

love the blog, love the Flyers…but am living in Phoenix, so they take a back seat to the Coyotes sometimes…

Carcillo is just like Steve Downie without the dangerous/suspension-worthy plays. He is a complete instigator/agitator (and he will sometimes take an extra 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct, but he’s gotten better about that). He fights like a mad man (will make Cote a less essential roster spot), but is quick and has some offensive skill.

You are going to love, love, LOVE this guy in Philly. Quite frankly, I’m shocked that the Coyotes traded him, but at least he’s going to my other favorite team…

so, all in all,

we dumped a cancer, a pretty good dman, a really good backup goalie, and a fan fave for a serviceable dman and a bunch of 3rd/fourth line players…its like they just played musical chairs…sure, dmo and telly were ufa, and likely not to sign, but we got very little overall for them…joker trade may be a positive, lombardi’s not bad, but the carcillo trade did not make a lot of sense. this is all in all a pretty bleak day for this franchise, and proves once again that management has their heads up their butts…please, please, let some new investors come in with lots of money that will INSIST on their own management team and make some major changes….

the yotes 3rd uni sucks

by goldenbear64 on Mar 4, 2009 1:50 PM MST reply actions

A few counterpoints...

Not sure that D-Mo is definitely not coming back in a few months. Sure, this has to hurt not to get a deal done, but he wants to be here, and I think for the right deal, we’d love to have him. I’ll wait to see what happens over the next few months before I pan that trade. Especially, since I think Dawes and Prucha have a lot of upside…Prucha got on someone’s blacklist in NY and never got a shot, but he has real talent. Don’t know enough about Kalinin to make a comment. Dawes and Upshall are good pieces as well. Check the Flyers blog to see how people feel about the loss of Upshall…

The Telly trade was a nothing move…he’s never going to get a fair shake here behind Bryz, so I’m fine with that. The Jokinen trade just makes me pissed about trading away Ballard in the first place…but I don’t know enough about Lombardi and Prust to see if we got a good return (probably with Joker’s cap hit, it was as good as can be expected).

Certainly losing Carcillo sucks, and it’s a horrible PR move for the team…but we shall see what happens. This team is all about the youth coming up…Turris, Boedker, Porter, Kolarik, Hanzal, Mueller, Tikhonov, MacLean, Lisin…that’s not a bad core of players…in fact, that’s a damn fine core when you throw in Doan, Jovo (when he plays like Jovocop), Michalek, Sauer. I think we need a coaching philosophy change…some coaches that turn all of this potential into a winning franchise. The pieces are there to succeed, now they just need the right gameplan/attitude/whatever to get it done…

World Ph*cking Champs! That was fun - let's do it again...

by Jordan Ellel on Mar 4, 2009 2:02 PM MST up reply actions

Would be nice

if DMo came back but I’m thinkin DMo (like Bally) got into it w/ GMDM (heard a rumor that DMo actually offered a 2 year deal to Don and didn’t get that either) he probably won’t be back if thats the case.

Danny’ s return was a steal. Upshall is no slouch, his points make him 4th or 5th on the team comin in the door AND we got a 2nd round pick to boot. Lets face it, we loved DC but the staff was tryin to make him something he wasn’t supposed to be. Danny mad is a scoring, aggitating madman. They reined him in too hard in all the wrong times and were partially responsible for when he did finally blow his lid. Vaya Con Dios Wild Thang, I think you may have found a home and maybe will regain your scoring touch.

DMo was also a pretty good return. Prucha has 30 goal potential and was definitely in Renney’s doghouse. Dawes was on a high development curve too for awhile til Renney pretty much tried to turn NYR into a defensive workhorse team. I like both of them. Kalinin I don’t know much about but remember, we’re a team that fields David Hale…

Olli – wish we had left him in FLA because he really cost us big time… but Ballard and GMDM were not going to do well together anyway after the RFA negotiations. But I like Lombardi alot, the 1st will be a blessing at draft time too. Prust is feisty (not as good a fighter as DC but who is at that weight class?) Ultimately Ballard n Boynton netted us a 1st, Lombardi and Prust because I’d rather forget Olli’s stint here.

Can only wish the misused Telly good luck and beat the pants off Lalime! He’s still stuck behind a top notch goalie but if he can step up and rock Lalime out in Miller’s absence, then maybe Buffalo will give him more games than he was ever gonna get here.

Yeah...

In the end they moved three of the four guys that I said would probably move (I know Hale was a pipe dream, but it’s my pipe dream, damnit!). And the only additional move was Carcillo, which may not be such a bad move considering the return. It’s just a PR nightmare is all…

Now the key is to see TGO bench Fedoruk for a few games and get the skill guys in there all at once…Turris, Prucha, Lisin, Upshall…let’s be the fastest team in the league and skate some circles around these other teams. And it would be pretty funny if Upshall can score in his first ’Yotes game against Boston since he scored there yesterday in his last game with Philly…

by goldenbear64 on Mar 4, 2009 3:29 PM MST up reply actions

The consensus around the league is that Phoenix VASTLY improved...

…and I agree.

Olli was a cancer. Period. The Calgary room might be able to control him better and Keenan might get more out of him, but it’s pretty clear that Maloney wanted Olli gone. We get a serviceable center with good faceoff skills in Lombardi and a Carcillo replacement in Prust, plus a 1st (the only one traded today, BTW, IIRC) back. Not the avalanche of great return that we’d hoped but addition by subtraction.

A 4th for Telly is a GREAT deal for a UFA backup goalie.

Carcillo, like I said before, was not fitting into the team. He was a loose cannon and a discipline problem. Fan favorite, yes, but he was also instrumental in costing us a few games due to his mouth and inability to control himself. He’ll be a good add for Philly and we got a good player in Upshall back.

Prucha for Morris would have been a pretty equal straight-up trade, but Sather threw in Dawes and Kalinin. Say what you want about their ability but they’re solid depth and they have proven to be better points scorers than about half of our team.

So, in essence, for a fire sale we didn’t do half bad. 1st, 2nd, and 4th rounders, plus six guys who at WORST are cheap, RFA depth for a franchise that needs that kind of thing. Also, if we get new investors and an infusion of cash, we’ll have a buttload of cap space to work with in free agency.

What a flurry of activity ....

So, is it the trainer that hands out the "Hello, My Name is _______ " stickers, or is that a front-office thing?

trade deadline..

the telly trade is a joke.. a fourth round pick for him? i always though he deserved more playing time. oh well, it’ll give one of the minor league goalies some NHL time, like montoya.. i wish we hadn’t traded DMo or Carcillo, but they seem like good trades so what can i say? i have to agree on the fact that that OJ hasn’t played up to what he should’ve.. so its not too bad that hes going..

NOT Danny Boy....

nooooo why trade him, I loved the guy, this team has no one now that can drop the gloves and hammer someone, hope what they got is worthwhile….and Telly why him? those two trades I didn’t agree on, at least he might get a chance in Buffalo, go Telly

by boedkerrocks on Mar 4, 2009 3:59 PM MST reply actions

Some explanation on Telly

Telly got traded because he’s a 32 year old UFA backup goalie. We’re actually lucky that we got him for a 4th-rounder – Philly got Kyle McLaren for a 6th rounder, after all.

We have three goalies in the system right now – Tordjman (who will get the backup role now that Telly is gone), Montoya, and Gistedt who will most likely move to San Antonio from Prescott to see if he’ll up his game against better competition.

It was a good trade for the franchise – giving a young guy a shot for the rest of the season, and if he doesn’t work out we can go fishing for a UFA backup – and for Telly, who will get a lot more playing time with Miller out and Lalime forced to pick up the slack.

olli jokinen..

one good thing about the jokinen trade is that he’ll finally get to the playoffs with a team like calgary.. i’m a big fan of pretty much all finnish players, because i’m from finland. so it’d be nice to see jokinen finally get to play a post-season game after so many consecutive games.. isn’t he the player with most consecutive games without a playoff appearance?

We’ll have to find out if we came out on the good side though. All the experts seem to thing we did great which means we sucked.

ROFLMAO

the experts think Calgary got the best job done… only if Keenan can chill Olli out and get him to produce too otherwise they’ll implode and never make the playoffs while he’s there. I think we’ll look back from 2010 and go… Good Job!!

That's only if it's Milbury praising your deal...

some of those guys know something about something…

I think now that my anger about the failures of Olli Jokinen (not the trade today, but the whole Olli experiment in Phoenix) and losing Carcillo (man, I’ll miss watching him in the Maroon, Sand and Black…but he will look great in Orange & Black) have subsided a bit, I am actually fairly content with the trades made by Maloney. As I said earlier somewhere…he gave up none of the core players on this team that will form the foundation of a successful franchise in years to come…of course, that’s assuming they will still have a franchise and the coaches don’t completely screw them up…

World Ph*cking Champs! That was fun - let's do it again...

All this talk about Calgary “winning on D Day”. I say horsecrap. Phoenix wins today for sure! I can’t believe you guys milked the Rangers that badly for Morris! Nice!
Matt Lombardi will blow your mind with his blazing speed and tenacity. He has good hands too and may discover them in Phoenix. Nice work, Maloney.

Man....

I came so close to choosing the “Craptacular – I’m following the Nippon Paper Cranes of the Asia League from now on…” option of your poll simply for the mention of the Paper Cranes… but alas… I did not choose it. Because I think it wasn’t too terrible of a trade. We’ve got lots of up and coming goaltending talent in the system, we will be ok. Much luck to Telly with the Sabres… he will be missed.

Don't worry

There will be other options for the other trades shortly. I think I know which one you’ll go with the bottom option on :-(
