Mueller Almost Traded...

Don't know exactly what to make of this (requires ESPN Insider account).  Basically it reiterates something I saw (perhaps on Puck Daddy) regarding Maloney and Sather discussing a Mueller to the Rangers for _____.  Apparently Sather wanted to send back just a minor leaguer (perhaps feeling burned after giving up Prucha, Dawes (and another?) for Morris last year; although I think the Lisin-Korpedo deal settled that score), but Maloney held firm that he wanted Dubinsky or Callahan.

I'm not really in favor of trading Mueller by any means because I think he has a world of talent (Exhibit A is his beautiful break out chip off the boards to Lombo last night vs. LA), but if he really isn't going to fit into Tippett's system (which is clearly the best thing to happen to the 'Yotes in 5 years), then perhaps he has to go.  But I'm happy that Maloney won't give him away for a nobody.  Dubinsky's a good player who gives you gritty minutes with a bit of finesse (a more-skilled Fiddler?), and there's no doubt he's a hard worker at both ends of the ice (I don't know enough about Callahan to comment).

Hopefully Mueller's recent play on the wing with Lombardi and Upshall puts these rumors to sleep, but if not, let's hope Maloney doesn't settle for Sather's leftovers or someone like Shane O'Brien.  Don't need anything like this happening:

Unless it's when he's playing against the Coyotes again...then it can happen all the time.

I’d trade him for either guy in a NY minute, especially if its Callahan. The guy is nails. He was the Rags best player in the playoffs against the Caps last year. Unlike Mueller he does whatever it takes.

I know you can’t teach desire, and it’s the thing about Mueller that appears lacking…but if he finds that ability to play hard, he is much more talented than either Rangers guy. Mueller has 30-40 goal potential. That’s what the Coyotes need; we’ve got a lot of grinders and good 2-way pivots already. That’s the only reason I don’t like trading Mueller for these guys…

Very logical reasoning. My concern is that the NHL is not for on the job training to the degree he seems to need it. Potential is great, but I’m not seeing it being realized anytime soon. I agree that the Yotes huge area of need is scoring, but I don’t see Mueller being the answer.

Kevin Porter

When are the Coyotes going to do the right thing and TRADE the Hobey Baker award winner instead of burying him in the hellhole quagmire of the San Antonio Rampage? While his ex teammates and opponents that were less talented are flourishing, Phoenix thinks he can’t play in the NHL? Trade him where he’s wanted and watch HIM flourish.

Sorry, but Porter is not some elite scorer being held down. From what I’ve seen of him on TV and in person he’s nowhere near a steady NHL player at this point. I watched him at rookie camp and I was unimpressed. A guy like Porter should have absolutely dominated. He may turn into a good NHL player, but to say that the Yotes should trade him because they aren’t letting him flourish is inaccurate at best. He’s not exactly on his way to AHL MVP. Let me know when he’s dominating in the AHL and not being called up when a roster spot opens and then maybe I’ll listen.

lets trade away our young players who can go find their scoring touch elsewhere. what a great idea. looks like a typical coyotes draft pick.

Zbynek Michalek

Can any Yotes fan let me know if plans for Zbynek Michalek have been made public? The sites show him as unsigned for next year and he should be due for a major raise based on his solid play. Has Maloney indicated he wants to sign him soon? Could he be traded at the deadline to get a bunch or picks/prospects? So many teams (including mine!) are looking for a quality D-Man, I’m surprised he’s not already locked up. What have you folks heard?

I haven’t heard anything specifically, but I cannot imagine that the Coyotes will not be re-signing Z. He’s their best defensive defenseman and he’s an alternate captain. I imagine things like new contracts were waiting until the ownership situation got straightened out.

Thrashers?

One of the biggest storylines in the NHL right now is the Trashers having issues resigning Kovy. Everyone says the Coyotes have always needed that to tier scorer to put them to the next level. And they said that they might be able to make a big signing once the ownership is straightened out.

So I was going through the NHL rumors on ESPN and it said the Thrashers were looking to add a young d-man, which made me come up with this trade:

Phoenix:
Peter Mueller
Sami Lepisto
1st Round Pick in 2010 (We have 2 of ‘em and this year’s draft doesnt look that deep from what i’ve seen)

Atlanta:
Ilya Kovalchuk

Imagine Kovy, Doan, and Lang as our top line.

And if we can’t get Kovy to resign at least it’d help us get some fire power and make our first run towards a Whiteout in too long.

And that deal bothers me, cause I’m really like Sami, but why not when you’d get an all star in return.

And heck, if it looks like we could actually resign him, would you be willing to give up more? Maybe a Yandle or even… Z? :X

I haven’t seen any Ilya to know if his defensive skill would mesh with what the team is playing, so that might be something of a problem if he’s one-sided, but it’s worth a shot.

Plus with rumors of the Red Wings showing interest, why not try to c-block the scum of the league?
