Valley teams losing out to economy

In today’s Arizona Republic Craig Harris discussed how teams in the valley are losing out to the economy:

Every professional sports team in metro Phoenix, along with Arizona State University’s football team and the annual Fiesta Bowl, has had trouble selling tickets this year as growing unemployment and declining wages are keeping fans home.

Teams have been forced to try promotions once considered unthinkable as the drop in attendance cuts deeper into revenue and costs jobs. For example, the Phoenix Suns saw their 153-game streak of sellouts at US Airways Center end Nov. 1, and a few days later the team laid off about 10 percent of its workforce.

My thought is that this is an important article for people to read.  If the established teams like the Suns and Cardinals are doing poorly, how can the Coyotes who aren't as established, with a poor economy and an out of the way arena expect to draw big numbers.

Now that being said, if the NHL finds the team local ownership, how long before you think the team rebounds and the crowds start coming back?

Without reading the article, I can guess at its point and agree that it is a cause for concern…the D-Backs were drawing terribly all summer long and it is not a surprise that the Suns were having problems selling tickets considering most fans’ expectations for this year. What will be interesting is that now that the Suns are 6-1, will fans be showing up in larger numbers.

As for the Coyotes, if/when local ownership is found, it is still going to be a rough draw until either (1) it is evident the team is going to make the playoffs, (2) the new owners put together some very good ticket packages (hopefully with some form of compensation to the remaining season ticket holders), or (3) next year if the fans can be convinced that the team is truly sticking around.

I am lucky enough to have a fairly comfortable job and not a lot of fear of being soon out of work, and I still cut back on the costs of my tickets this year…I know that the number of season ticket holders is WAY down from last year and it’s not likely to improve until next year. Individual games will draw better once the economy shows a bit of a come-back and/or the team makes the playoffs. I have no doubt that a white-out will lead to a sell-out, particularly if the Suns fall back to where everyone thought they’d be before the season started…

World Ph*cking Champs! That was fun - let's do it again...
